Ok so I work alot with the high schoolers at my loyal church and use knife making to make connections with some of the guys in the group. It works well they call me and talk about problems they have and come to me for spiritual advice sometimes also. Recently at a local youth event I met a young man who is into swords and sword fighting. Apperantly there is a local organization he in that meets and does some kind of sparring type thing. Well I got to talking to him and he asked if I ever made a sword. I told him no but Im down for the challenge. So we talked and scheduled a couple days so far to work on it.

Its made from aldo's 2" wide 1/4" w2. He had a basic design which to me looks to be of a mid evil or dark age era sword. Here is where we are at so far. Its right around 27 1/2" long including the handle area which I havn't touched yet.

Its actually lighter then I thought.

Today I lined up the ricasso areas and made them nice and rounded with some round files and they are nice and even now. Also started draw filing and sanding. I got the feeling I got a LOT of sanding to do... lol

We are gonna work on it some more when he has another day free and hopefully soon Ill start looking for a place that can heat treat it. Its fun to see these kids light up when they realized they are making something like this or a knife. Well worth the material cost to me to see that look they have when they hold it! :D:thumbup:

BTW i grinded this like a big dagger. I've seen people grind length wise on a big wheel etc but I wasnt too comfortable attempting that. I basically did sections and blended them into each other.

Yep, finishing takes a LONG time. I get all mine heat treated by darrin sanders on here, but he can only do up to 24". Maybe Peters?

Will be interested to see what you do with the handle.

Since that's W2, you could lay clay (satanite) down the middle of that blade. You should get a cool hamon. Looking good!
