This billet actually started out destined to be a gladius! Then I realized, forging it out, that I had way too much metal- and this wicked front clip was forming, so I ran with it.

Aldo's 1084 stock, semi forged (every part has been hit with a hammer, but nothing much beyond thinning the blade edge out except for forge drawing and shaping the front bit.)

Full convex zero grind, with thickest part about 1/3 of the way down from the spine. Sharpened reverse edge along the clip.

Handle is going to be full tang scales. No historical accuracy here, just a seax like look, which will completely not match the tip of the blade :D Well, I could claim it's a heavy kindjal.....

18 inch blade, 24 inches OAL. 1 pound 10 ounces.

HEAVY, but still pretty fast on the pell.

Okay, what good is this without pics: (handle is gluing up right now)

it does have some of that look, but I think it's almost closer to a heavy bladed kindjal.

Handle is being worked on, I should have more photos up soon.

Ted- you going to the Reno show next week, it'll be there :D

handle has first two coats of linseed oil, i should have photos up tomorrow.

So far I've cut myself 5 times on this thing. 3 of them those nasty little paper cut type cuts. Guess it's sharp enough.

that long clip has cut me a few times now....

Anyway, PHOTO PORN

Handle is jatoba. Pins are stainless tubing. I considered taking some 3/16 brass and some 7 strand stainless cable and doing a mosaic, but I dunno. This looks pretty good.

you can't see it, but the last photo is on top of the 42 inch quench tank I made out of 6 inch iron pipe.

christof, good looking sword. i've been thinking of cooking up my own shortsword, but lacking a forge i don't really want to waste a ton of metal grinding it out from stock...

looks mean and very practical in a sort of spartan multi purpose sort of way. i imagine it would make a fine machete, small hardwood limb chopper, animal slayer and a fine weapon as well. i also like the gladius style handle...
