First time getting stitches - lesson learned and pic warning

Had me ESEE izula in the sheath clipped in my left pocket while I did some work outside yesterday. Went to draw it, I grabbed the handle with my left hand and the sheath with my right hand so I wouldn't pull it from my pocket.

Well, the index finger on my right hand must have been a tad too high on the sheath. I drew the knife in one quick motion - schwick! It hurt but not that bad, but I could tell just from how weird it felt that it was a deep cut. I didn't see it but wrapped it in a clean cloth and held it with pressure over my head for 20 minutes. When I then tried to look at it it was just a bloody mess and still bleeding a lot, so off to urgent care we went.

As the nurse put it, I almost cut pad of my finger off. The worst part was the last stitch as somehow the lanocane had not numbed a small area and I fully felt the stitch needle going in and coming out. Hurt way more than the original cut.

At any rate - be careful with your tools, and pay attention!

That one could have been MUCH worse!!
Glad there was something to stitch together!

Damn brother, not to long ago I cut myself pretty bad.. occasionally it happens. Heal fast. Super glue is your friend lol although in your case stitches were probably more appropriate.

Hope you heal quick and with full nerve recuperation being that it is your pointer finger. Perhaps you should carry a bigger knife so there is more sheath to grasp. :) I like my Izula a lot and for most things it is more than enough. Yet, somehow, I must also have a larger blade to pair it with. For safety reasons?:D Yea, that sounds good.

Thank you also for the picture and story. It does help remind me and caution all of us to the danger and inconvenience of a momentarily absent mind around the sharp and pointy.

yeah that's a good one...keep it clean and heal up!

And this is your first time getting stitches? wow...in my lifetime, I've probably gotten more than the amount of stitches featured on the clothes I'm wearing today. LOL..

Hopefully they also updated your tetanus/tdap shot.

Did almost the exact same thing with my Izula. Not nearly as bad a cut, but it was just dumb luck, on my part.

Hope there's no nerve damage.

Yes! This is very easy to do. Don't feel bad. I've nearly done this myself countless times. We just have to be diligent to be careful at all times. Thanks for the post. Your picture will probably help me remember to be careful when performing this exact same activity. I am sure your post may have just prevented many replications of this type of accident.

Duh! Sorry to hear that and hope you heal soon.

I got bit by my Rajah this morning taking pics for a recent thread... First time after a year of almost daily carrying it. Wasn't that bad, though, and I just patched it up!

I feel you, jPrime 84!

Always best to seek the advice of a medical professional. No reason to verbally emasculate the OP about preventing infection or further blood loss. Don't lose context here as this particular conversation has maintained a cautionary context.

Pretty bad-ass self-aid though.

If you guys only knew how many times I have to stitch people up from knife cuts. I've had a few myself, but I keep suture kits at the house. I also get a lot of accidental discharges and some of the stories the patients come up with make me laugh right in their face. I don't call them on it - besides cracking up - because my only job is to give them care. We get so many bullet wounds, that we don't even report them unless we have a BOLO, the patient wants us to, or is a minor.

Also, like Comeuppance said, super glue is a great way to treat small flesh wounds. I prefer Super Glue Gel these days, and I used it constantly in the field. I'd have 20 tubes on me at all times.

I got the TDAP right before my 2 year old son was born, so I was in the clear there.

Thanks all for the good thoughts.

Pffff. Pansy. Superglue and a blowtorch are all you need.

Well, that's harsh.

I actually had the superglue out, but I could not get it to stop bleeding. Plus with it being my right hand, and me being right handed, it was hard to do much of anything.

Bottom line was for a $20 copay I was fine getting treated by a pro. I still got home in time to watch the Panthers go 6-0!

Mmmmmmm; gooey. ;)

:barf::thumbdn:

Gotta keep those precious fingers safe LOL.:foot:

Well that's pretty crude and extremely painful haha.
A Big lighter seems more appropriate. :D

It's not hot enough. You want that sear to happen quick. Sometimes in the field, it's all you have to stabilize wounds.
