looks like ivory. Those sure are pretty and I even like the mirror finish on the ivory handled one.

I'd be cautious of buying anything with ivory and shipping overseas. I'm not saying this to bring up any debate or anything, just a general comment... so keep your hats on everyone. The elephant is an endangered species and sometimes customs officials don't like endangered species parts coming into the country. Even if supposedly older, pre-endangered speices act, items are grandfathered... sometimes they just don't care.

Some years back a friend bought a beautiful, mid 18th century French violin bow that had an ivory frog. For lack of better words, playing this bow was a religious experience. Not only did she have this high quality bow and fiddle, she knew how to use them; one of the most outstanding musicians I've ever met... and she was a hottie too!

In 1998, she flew to Cremonae, Italy to play in a concerto competition. Instead of checking the fiddle, or carrying it on, she had it shipped there to insure that it would arrive safely (because regardless of tighter security, all that BS, if you can't carry an expensive violin on a plane, you take your business elsewhere). The fiddle made it to Italy just fine, she played in the competition (didn't win but just playing there is an honor). The next week when she got home she opened her violin case and everything was there and intact except the bow. The ivory frog had been rather forcefully removed, ruining a $20,000 bow. A piece of paper from customs was in the case explaining how they removed contraband items. They refused to compensate her for destroying an irreplacable bow.

Not trying to hijack the thread in any way. I just thought it deserved a mention to be careful what you have shipped where.

Hey. You guys do know that CRK inlays Sebenzas and Mnandis with Fossilized Wooly Mammoth Ivory, don't you? As a matter of fact I have two Mnandi's with Mammoth Ivory Inlayed Handles and it is a very beautiful natural material. Since the Wooly Mammoth is extinct it is perfectly legal to excavate the remains and sell the Ivory.

If I'm mistaken and that is real Elephant Ivory, I apologize for not knowing the difference.

I would guess it is inner cut Mammoth Ivory used for the inlays. Beautiful stuff.

It is definitely inner cut Mammoth Ivory. The Bark Mammoth Ivory, which is denser than the inner cut Ivory, has blue, brown and yellow colors as a result of having been exposed to the elements over the centuries. BTW, the Bark is more expensive due to being the rarer of the two cuts.

Right, it is mammoth ivory. And it's also perfectly legal to use pre-endangered species act elephant ivory (if you happen to have some in stock).

Psychopomp is correct. Customs apparently hadn't a clue how the ivory ban works in regards to pre-act and legacy items. Especially since it should have been obvious the item was an antique. While I am outraged, I also feel deeply for the loss of her 'magical' bow. That was as much a crime as taking a hammer to a Michaelangelo sculpture. :( :grumpy:
