So I've recently decided to make my own fixed blade. The blade is 4.5 inches long, one inch across, and most likely 3/16 inch wide. The handle is four inches long, and I'm aiming at about half an inch wide. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations concerning cheap, softer steel, and also a good looking wood, preferably with a reddish color to it. I would also really appreciate some other tips, for whatever you think I might need, and also maybe a link to a good first belt grinder. I don't have a big budget right now, so my main tool is my dremel. I have plenty of metal cutting wheels and grinding wheels, but of course it's not preferable. Thanks!

I've thought about it, and I'm thinking I'll throw some charcoal in my fire pit or grill, then dunk the metal in water. I don't have any real set-up yet, like I said, but I did some research and this worked for some people.
