Hi, First post so I hope I have the right forum.
I am about to try to make my first knife.
Nothing fancy, just a knife to see if I enjoy the process.

I have many years of general metalwork and woodwork experience with most tools., so the equipment itself is not an issue.

I want to start with the most basic question, what type of material and grade of grit is best on a belt sander for shaping knife steel?
Specifically, my first attempt will be on a piece of 8670 and generally a simple bowie shape.
Please dont get too involved, It's very early days for me. I just want to make sure I'm not going to shred the wood sanding belts I have.

Thanks for the link, this is a very big site. After a half hour browsing that forum it looks like I'm asking too basic a question. Shaping, cutting out, power grinding and hand filing are all things I know and have done a lot of, mostly to be painted for custom motorcycle work. But I havent actually fine sanded a finish (literally, a finish) on this shape of steel. I use a belt sander for my woodworking hobby but only a 4" x 36", not a large multi wheel adjustable sander / grinder and I'm unsure which type (cloth, paper, fabric) and what grits to use. (anywhere from 40 to a 1000?).
I think I need to do some more surfing.
Thank you.
