Good Morning Everyone!

This is my first post to BFC, and I'm really glad to have found this site!

My area of specialization is within the scope of firearms, not knives (except for attachments such as bayos), so I need a little schooling. :)
My husband is a US Marine, and is into martial arts, so he has helped me a little, but his speciality lies really within the area of Japanese weaponry.

I consign quite a few private collections, and my dad sent me a huge box of blades that he purchased, and wanted to know if I could help him out getting rid of them. As I have, really, little clue about blades, I began my research online....and thankfully found BFC.

At any rate, 95% of the blades he sent me were from Frost Cutlery. A lot of them really look pretty neat, but I was disheartened to find that most knife owners view Frost Cutlery as the "Wal-Mart" of blade. I also viewed Frost's site, and was a little confused at their pricing versus what I have seen online.

Can anyone help me out here please?
What is the general consensus on Frost Cutlery, and who actually buys these things?

Thanks so much guys, and I look forward to learning a lot from ya'll!

Generally, Frost Cutlery is seen as very poorly designed wall art. I personally think the MSRP of those things is inflated intentionally so that people can give them big discounts and sell them whereas they might not sell otherwise. The knives are sold by the pound on TV. They look nice, and they might even be sorta sharp, but nobody here really uses them in a serious manner. Sad to say (for your father) that the general customer for these kinds of knives are of the swap meet variety, and pre-teens looking for something cool looking. Hopefully I helped, and didn't offend. Thank you and your husband for BOTH of your service to this country.

Yeah, Frost Cutlery, as said above, is widely considered to be low-end stuff and not intended (or should not be considered) for hard use. Some of there stuff is "pretty" as far as looks go, but that is the depth of the quality, sadly. As said above, this is not meant to offend, but it really is the way most "knife guys/gals" on this forum would feel about those knives. When I think of "Frost Cutlery" I think about knives at county fairs, flea markets, and of people who just want something that looks tough, or "pretty" or whatever....

As said, the MSRP is very inflated to give the illusions of high savings....the MSRP for such import knives generally can't be taken seriously.

No offense at ALL! This is exactly the information I need. I can give ya the military specs on a M1 garand or immediately spot a "true" mod to a Ar-15 or SKS, but I can tell diddly about a knife, unfortunately.

So, I'm looking at those crazy gun-n-knife shows again I guess.
And, these are considered mostly fantasy-type, yes?

I just hope I can get back what my dad spent on them....I've already called him and told him not to send me anymore! :o

if you guys have any more information on them, please let me know!

Thanks Again!

YES!!!! Until throughly inspected, and prodded any Frost folders that you have should be considered DANGEROUS! Forget the soft steel, forget the poor materials, forget the ... whatever. These knives are potential finger slicing machines because they are notorious for having bad lock up. I'm sure you'll find some that lock well, but you might find one that completely fails to stay open. Even the fixed blades should be used very carefully. Good Luck. (and I'm sorry about all of those...... knife-like objects)

"knife-like objects"...LOL!

Thank goodness, all of the ones I have are fixed blades. None of them are folding. My husband did keep one of the two katanas I got, but he's refinishing the hilt and handle. Mainly, it will be for show, along with the other mass weaponry he packrats in the house. :)

Thanks, you guys, again for the information. Hopefully, I'll be able to gid rid of these things somehow!

Welcome to the forums! Thanks for your and your husbands service. If you want to get rid of them try Ebay they sell that stuff all the time. I would just sell it as a group ( you can sometimes come out better that way than individually). When I was a kid I had a bunch of Frost or Parker cutlery and it wasn't half bad back then, but as so many have said todays Frost is junk. Try doing a search for the video that has the guy selling a Frost Katana. He slaps it against the table and it breaks and from what I have heard cuts him preatty badly. Thanks.

:D

I think there is a member on here that has that video somewhere in their sig line.

That's a Frost?!?! Oh lov-e-ly.

I might have to write a disclaimer to tag on each of these monsters!

A katana! Oh my! About 10 years ago I shattered a cheap katana hitting a piece of wood. The top 2/3 of the blade flew over my shoulder like a spear and missed by about 3 inches. I never bought another cheap knife after that! :D
(In other words, I, in my ignorance, almost turned out like that guy on the HSN)

Funny, as it may have been, I really don't want to have that kind of mess on my conscious from anything I've personally sold or traded. For that matter, I really don't like the idea of having any mention of cheap connotations latched to my name!

I deal in the high-end on the firearm side. My last consignment consisted of 2 Browning Belgium shotguns, one worth well over 3k. I'm not about to drop myself down to the level of ye 'ole supercenter!

Hopefully, as I stated before...I'll be able to unload these things quick, at least get what he purchased them for, and be back to "regular" business. :D

Thanks again!

There are two frost companies...
the one that deserves all the bad publicity is the one that everyone has been talking about. The other Frosts is made in Sweden (known very often as "Frosts of Sweden) and is actually a line of well made and inexpensive utility knives.

If you don't want those knives going to some kid who's just going to damage himself with it, get rid of them at a yard sale as "gardening knives" or "scrapers". Knives like that can be useful, sparing decent blades from digging weeds or scraping paint.

Frost Cutlery is to knives as paintings of Elvis on black velvet is to art.* :barf:

It's kitchsy, it's cheesey, it's cheap, and as Walking Man mentioned above, a potential accident waiting to happen.

* nothing against Elvis, just against cheesey art

I totally agree. Frost Cutlery only tickles the fancy of "mall ninjas" and "Rambo wannabe" teenagers. Those knives, at best, are made of cheap 420J2 and have no heat treating at all. Since you are "gun smart" think of 'em as Kel-Techs or High-Points. Cheaply made knives that look "high speed" to the untrained eye and even imitate the more expensive brands. I see those a lot in my frequent visits to the flea market... What!? You do get some good stuff really cheap!
