I bought my 13 year old son a .22 for his birthday. Took friday afternoon off and we went to the range. He had gone to hunter safety this summer, so he understood the safety rules. We had a great time. He is usually into computer games and when I get home from work, its beer and a book so it was nice to spend some quality time together.

He's not a bad shot, really enjoyed shooting an iron rooster at about 25 yard and a pig at 50 more than the paper. I can't shoot at all anymore  Shakey and no trigger control.

I need to make more time to do this stuff! Thanks

An old American tradition being passed from father to son......great job, Shann!
Too often these fall through the cracks and are lost.

Good going getting your son started right
What kind of .22 did you get? I've got a marlin I'm kind of partial too although there are a lot prettier rifles out there.

As far you not being able to shoot any more, get yourself a 12 guage and some trap loads then challenge the boy to some knockdown targets, your new "rifle" against his ;)

Glad to hear it! I still love shooting and hunting with my Dad and Grandfather every chance I get. Lots of good memories.

What a great gift-- not only will he have the rifle to cherish, but also the memories of shooting with his father.

I got him a Ruger 10-22. I have one myself. I am having him learn on the open sights; my eyes need the scope.

I wanted to get him a single shot and had picked out a used Winchester single shot which would have been perfect but it had a broken "elevator" on the rear sight and I didn't want to wait for the part. The guy I was buying from had a nearly perfect used Ruger and gave me too good a deal to pass up.

Are you going squirrel/small game huntin this year?

I don't think so. I've never really done much small game hunting. I will be going bird hunting here as soon as the weather cools down a bit. I will probably try to borrow a 20 guage for him to carry ( I know I can't hit anything with a .410!).

I haven't decided yet about deer hunting. We may go, just for the experience, but I haven't hunted deer for several years. I would plan on just sticking together and maybe just sitting out for a couple hours. My friend has a .243 he was going to let me borrow for my son.

I remember going to an indoor range with my son. I was talking to a friend and he was shooting my .380 auto. He had a missfire and he calmly waited for a break in the conversation (keeping the gun pointed down range) and told me "Dad the gun..." at that point in time the gun went off and scared the living daylights out of both of us. The only time I have ever seen a hangfire.

Very nice! I have 2 daughters who shoot some. My 14 yo wants to deer hunt!!!

I have my own range so it was easy to teach them. They even wanted to bring their targets to school.

The average age of a hunter is around 45. :( Hunting will die out in a generation or two.We need to bring in the young folks, but it may be too late.
