Hello ladies and gents! Was hoping to get a little advice since I have never owned a sword (until now) and want to understand how to store it properly. I have done lots of research but can't find an answer to my specific question.
I bought a replica of Jon Snow's sword from Game of Thrones, and it's a limited edition run with Damascus for the blade. Being Damascus of course it needs proper care to not rust. I understand that oils and renaissance wax are good options to keep it protected, but here is my question. I live in the desert, and if I display this sword it's going to have a layer of dust on it in about a day or two which I really want to avoid dealing with constantly. I would prefer to keep it in it's leather scabbard. I have read many times that a leather scabbard can also produce rust since it can gather and trap moisture. Fortunately it's very dry here, however I want to do this properly. If I keep it in the scabbard, how often do you think I would need to take it out, clean it, and re-oil / wax it to make sure it's not an issue? Thanks so much!

If waxing it it, and you make sure to do so thoroughly, it should be fine indefinitely. It's only ever going to be vulnerable if the protective layer of wax scrapes off. As far as dust goes, though, you could always just take a swiffer to it when it gets visibly dusty.

Thanks for the reply! I was thinking in my situation the renaissance wax may be better than the oils since I won't actually be using the sword. I may still hang it on the wall and just swiffer it which is a good idea too instead of the scabbard. I guess my fear has just been that it was pretty expensive, so if it shows any rust it will suck. Thanks for the advice!

I treat all my leather sheathes with SnowSeal, well melted in, but that may not be practical with yours -- I take them apart and restitch them after melting in a couple of coats. I use BreakFree CLP on the blades to prevent rust, as well. Wax might be better in your case.
