Hello name is Greg from West MI and I am new to axes and just found this site. I have been cutting and splitting wood for years, but recently got the bug to work on axes. I picked up my first which is a True Temper Kelly Perfect head. Here is my question, the toe is worn more than the heel. I watched one youtube video where the head was realigned by reducing the heel profile. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. It might be fun to learn how to do that, but I really don't want to screw up my first project. Thanks a ton in advance. Greg

I am a strong proponent of taking the heeel back to match a worn toe. One thing to keep in mind is that many of those Perfects have a heat treat that stops just about where the phantom bevels start. When new there is typically 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" of bit beyond the bevels. In this case I suggest giving the axe a vinegar soak to show the temper line. You may need to limit your re-profiling if you're running out of hardened steel.

Forgot to ask. How long do you soak the head for? Also the whole head or just the edge portion you are trying to look at? Thanks.

There is no good reason to automatically mess with it. Try using it as it is and see how it works, if it works then don't fix it.
