Hey guys, taking a trip to my family's land in Texas next month, and I'd like a nice axe for chopping some thinner trees and splitting firewood. I have a Fiskars to fall back on, but I feel a wood handle would be a lot more comfortable for use. Looking for something on the short side, but larger than a hatchet. Honestly I'm not very well versed on different axe sizes and styles, so hopefully you guys can help! Looking to keep the spending around $100, though preferably less. If you have a recommendation that's over $100, please explain the reasons to convince me into it. Thanks!

Also: I want something slightly on the compact side, and was thinking something between 18-24" or such, though if you have experience that recommend otherwise please tell me.

Sounds like you want a boys axe. 2#-2.5# on a 24-28 inch handle. Just be careful if you go to chop any "Bodark" as they call it in Texas, that's some tough stuff! The rest of us know it as Osage Orange. Great wood to work, though!
