I'm looking to purchase my first traditional folder. What are the top brands?

I was looking at what bladehq had to offer and I was surprised by how the traditional folder were a lot less money then most modern folders. Why is that?

So far I like the case trapperlock and the ka bar dogs head trapper. Thoughts on those?

Thank you,

Scott

Case, GEC, Northwoods, Queen, Eye-Brand, all will give you a very good using knife. Case CV is nice to work with, holds a nie edge and is easy to resharpen. The trapper lock is a nice knife, a friend of mine hs one and I'm impressed. But I'm a bit biased toward Case.

As for the traditions being less money than the moderns, I don't want to open that can of worms.

jackknife covered it well. I think the best place to start would be a Case in CV (or stainless if you want to keep it shiny, their stainless is plenty good I think) if you want to keep the price down, or a GEC (or GEC made Northfield). Both are good knives for the money with GEC having a greater variety and a higher level of consistency with their fit and finish.

Traditionals are great because you can find some very useable knives in the sub $50 range. I have a Case cv mini trapper that is a great little cutter.

You're about to be like a kid entering the worlds largest candy store, decisions, decisions.:D

Scott welcome to the traditional side.

Agreed, that Jackknife pretty much sums it up. If you want to try out a traditional first, I would look at Rough Rider and save the money. Not a top brand, but it will let you know if you like them before spending more. If you already know you like traditionals I am all in for Great Eastern. Just depends on your personable variables (budget, use, style, etc..)

Good luck with the hunt. Be warned ... A few more will probably follow. :D

Between the case trapperlock and ka-bar's dogs head trapper, I'd choose the Ka-bar. It;s a very high quality knife.
Canal Street makes Ka-bar's traditional knives so you will want to look at them as well not a lot of patterns but excellent quality..
GEC makes some really nice knives mostly in 1095 and a few in 440C including a trapper.

A suggestion as well may be to keep an eye on the for sale section. Many knives with lots of use left in them can be had quite reasonably.

Just watch for a pattern that catches your eye. The older Schrades are nice. I would suggest avoiding the off shore made newer ones. Same with Buck.
