so ive been looking into getting a traditional folder for the first time. I've always liked the barlow style knives but what are some other models should i look at or what brands should i look at? just looking for information size/weight aren't too important and price i would like it to be under 150. and recomendations? thanks for any help/ thoughts in advanced

There are too many different patterns available to list but here some good brands to check out. In no particular order:

Case
Queen
Great Eastern Cutlery (GEC)
Canal Street Cutlery
Buck
A.G. Russell
German Eye
Boker
Rough Rider

Well if you like the Barlow pattern, you will probably like the Jack pattern as well. Case, Great Eastern, Queen, and Schatt & Morgan are a few examples of excellent knife companies around today.

Now you have a list of knife companies, you have to decide how many blades you like 1, 2, 3 or more. Once you decide how many blades then choosing a pattern will be much easier.

... and price i would like it to be under 150.

In that price range, I'd be looking at Great Eastern Cutlery (GEC), and maybe some of the higher end Case knives.

Btw, welcome to the wide world of traditionals, and to the coolest knife (sub)forum on the web.

Hi, and welcome to our world :D
As you will probably discover soon, the range of variety in the world of traditional knives is alot wider than in modern folders, so it's not easy to give suggestions without clues...and you probably need to know more about traditionals to give us clues. My advice, as always, is to browse this thread:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...itional-Knife-quot-are-ya-totin-today/page698

backwards (yes, I know, it's 698 pages, but believe me, 50 pages will be enough to give you an idea about patterns, brands and so on). If you want to stick to Barlow though (for now ) most big brands produce (or have produced) a barlow style knife (as others have pointed out).
Either way, welcome to the club :)

That thread is dangerous! I lusted after several knives per page at least... I was "foolish" and looked through all 650 pages when I first found BF a month ago.

Sod-Busters. Cheap, strong, will. last forever. Either CV or Tru-Sharp, theres not a huge difference other than patina on the CV.
CV holds an edge a bit better, but Tru-Sharp sharpens easily.

Like above, if you like Barlows - then Jacks or Easy open Jacks would be right in line or Case's Sway Back Jack or Sway Back Gent. You could also branch off into Whittlers. But as previously stated, this could goe into almost any direction. As bladeboss said - you can't go wrong with a Sod-buster either (junior or standard size). Tons of makers both good & not so good...

one of my friends actually gave me a jr sod buster so im going to give that a try for a while and see how i like it
