It's been years since I've fished.

My son is in Cub Scouts now. They were supposed to have a "fishing derby" at a local lake, but the event was cancelled (after I bought two poles and some tackle.)

So last weekend I took him down to Quarry Lakes (just a few miles away in Fremont.) We weren't fishing for 5 minutes, when Andrew hooked a trout. I landed it for him. I was shocked at big the fish was.

Take a look!

BTW - I didn't get a bite that day!

glad to see you got your boy interested in one of the greatest pastimes of the USA.... and that is one heck of a nice lookin' fish ;)

I measured the fish just before I cleaned it - between 14" - 15"

Andrew is excited bout fishing. Granted, he still won't touch the fish, but he's excited about catching them.

He was excited for me to cook the trout. I wrapped it in foil with a bit of lemon juice, and slapped it on the grill. However, he was not to excited after tasting it! I thought it was very good, sort of a delicate flavor, not too fishy.

We used yellow power bait on a 6" leader with a sliding weight. I heard the white power bait works better. I'll try that next, and maybe increase the leader to 18" or 24".

Any good trout recipies?
 
Life don't get much better than that. Congrats to you & your boy, and may many happy years of fishing together lie ahead.
 
Thats a beauty of a trout! Theres nothing like catching your first fish, I remember catching mine when I was around 5 or something. I've been hooked onto it since. Good job getting him into it, lots of kids are never given the chance.
 
Looks like fun, enjoy. Those are the good times that you both will remember.

By the way...what did ya fillet it with?

All my kitchen knives are Henkles. I didn't fillet the trout, but I used a 10" chef knife to clean it. :)
