First true SAK on the way

I scored a used Victorinox brand Recruit SAK on ebay for $8 yesterday, a good deal considering the price of new ones. Unfortunately I think this is only the start for me, I fear that I'm now doomed to scouring ebay for other SAK auctions and buying them up as they catch my eye.

The Recruit is a great SAK. I have a couple that I have snagged off of the big auction site for less than $10 each.

I couldn't help myself. I don't ever have the Recruit and I just bought a Spartan for $8 as well.

Charlie -

Welcome to the SAK addict club. My name is Rich and I'm a SAK addict (50 now). Just wait until you get into the earlier models and the larger SAKs (more tools; I don't like the physically larger SAKs, I stick to the 84 and 91 mm although I have 4 of the larger ones - they never get carried). You're hooked now and there is no cure, no 12 step program, etc. You're a SAK addict for life so just enjoy it. It is cheaper than booze or women or gambling - well at least a llittle cheaper :-) I suggest going for a Tinker next or maybe even a Deluxe Tinker (that's what I carry in a belt pouch), a regular Tinker at home where my tools are always close.

You'll go nuts meeting all the other SAK addicts.

Forgot to add Sakwiki, all you ever wanted to know about SAKs but were afraid to ask - and then some.

If you want you could buy them 40+ lbs at a time! But those TSA auction sites never have good modern knives, plenty of good slipjoints and SAKs though. Anyways I'm rambling, SAKs are great and you WILL buy more. Just go on ebay or to the flea market so you have some money left for food :D.

Well I got the four SAKs in the mail today. The Recruit, the Tinker and the Spartans came just fine but the Tourist (at the time I thought it was another Spartan, I didn't look close enough) is so tight I can barely open anything even when I use a screwdriver for leverage. I applied oil to each of the pivot points but I can barely work each of the bits back and forth to work the oil in and it's not loosening up any.

Congratz! I recommend the Compact next. I can't find one that I like better yet.
The evil bay astonishingly is still a good place to get SAK's, real ones that is. It's pretty easy to spot a fake. And they're cheap on there compared to retail. I've never tried for one of those TSA auctions, but hey if you get fake ones just put em up on ebay and turn a profit. Just don't label it as a Victorinox, that's bad knifemanship.

Three new ones are on the way. Waiter, Tinker and Climber, all scored for good deals well below what new ones go for.

SAKs, like knives, guns, lights and MTs, are fun to collect, and are the kind of thing you can carry and use on a daily basis. Thats the best of both worlds.
