Well after starting with kydex I realized leather was a better fit for my style of knives. I finally got the nerve to just jump in and do it. I wanted to say thanks for all the great info on here. I've got a long way to go but they are leather and they hold knives so that's a start. The lighter one was my first and I know I didn't leave enough of the handle exposed. Any advice and critique is greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

I think you are off to a good start! Your stitching groove doesn't seem very straight so either you aren't using a stitching groover or your edge wasn't to shape or rough when you grooved it. Also it looks like you are using an thread awl to sew. Saddle stitching will look way better. Some people can use an awl and make it look beatiful. I have tried and tried and cannot. It doesn't look like you are beveling or burnishing your edges very well. A fellow on youtube by the handle Leodis Leather does some amazing videos. They are long and boring but will teach you the ins and outs. You also need to treat the flesh (rough) side of your leather as you seen on your 2nd attempt..

Here are my first few attempts. I was sure proud of them and thought they were awesome. Yours are quite a bit better than my first attempts. Again, you are not far from being really good. Keep at it and make the next one better than the last.

If you can get the knife out of the sheath without a hassle, the depth of the seating is just fine. At least it is likely to get lost and that's a good thing.

Thanks for the response! I bought some cheap tools and I think it is coming back to bite me. The stitching groover I have plugs up instantly and doesn't work. I tried a wheel to lay out the first one and it is loose and wanders all over the place. I did saddle stitch the second one with two needles but the first I just kinda winged it. Your right about not burnishing the edges. I was thinking the edge coat took the place of burnishing but I think I was wrong. Better tools and more research are definitely in order. I need to pay more attention to detail on the next one. I was a little skeptical they would even work out so I skipped some steps I shouldn't have.

It's not horrible but it takes two hands. It definitely won't fall out!
