First weekender of the season

Was finally able to get a weekend freed up and get some dirt time in. The stepson and I took a quick hike up to a little lake nestled in a small valley. Short hike, only 5kms, but not very well known. Not another soul was seen, which was just the way I like it :)

Lots of firsts for me on this trip. First time going to this lake. First time bringing my dog with me on an overnighter. First time using a hammock to sleep in. And, most importantly, first time using my Machax since I'd received it for Christmas.

Anyways, enough with the rambling, on to the pics:

Trailhead:

Kinda lost the trail at the beginning and ended up slogging thru some marshy meadows.

Got up to the trees and picked up the trail again. Made good time up to the low pass and into the valley where it drops into Gap Lake. Found a cleared campsite, and set up camp.

First on the to do list was to make some pegs for the tarps:

Think we ended up with 8. No problemo. Camp setup:

Hudson making friends with the locals:

Tools brought (minus my folding saw in my pack):

The afternoon brought a string of thundershowers thru the valley. Maybe 4 or 5 cells. Didn't last very long - maybe 20 mins per storm - so we hunkered down under the trees to wait them out, and watched and listened to the show.

Evening finally brought out the sun.

The 4 batonned thru some gnarly pine with ease. Fire prep was a piece of cake.

Random flora:

Hudson enjoying an evening dip and the sunset.

A little bit of fishing in the morning, but no joy. I think the combination of cooler temps and thunderstorms put them down.

Packed up in the afternoon and headed home. Felt good to get out, knock the rust off my hiking muscles, and knock the new off the BK4. Was starting to get the hang of snap cuts at the end. Can't wait to bring it out next time. Thanks for looking!

Man, you are more than welcome for looking! What awesome pics. Happy for you getting some dirt time. Looks like an excellent outing. How'd the hammock work out? Been digging mine since the last Gathering. Prolly gonna hang it in my backyard tomorrow night (in lieu of actual dirt time....thanks for sharing your adventure!

Those pics were absolutely fantastic. I agree the 4 processes firewood phenomenally. And the pictures of your dog "making friends with the locals" were priceless lol

Utterly gorgeous. We're solidly in the middle of air-conditioning season. Good to see places where it's cool enough to camp.

Awesome stuff man, thanks for posting. Damn, you went 6 months without using the 4, haha. That must have been hell. The BK4 is a lot of fun to use, isn't it? I love that blade. One of my favs.

Thanks GSOM. To tell you the truth, I probably had the best sleep I've ever had outdoors. I usually toss and turn the first night, not this time. Slept on my back the whole night - never do that. Not bad for a cheapo Costco hammock. Definitely be using it again - maybe wait till it gets a bit warmer tho :)

Thanks! Funniest thing I'd ever seen. He'd sit there, still as a statue, as the squirrel lost its mind. Wait until it got within a few feet, then try and leap at it. Never came close. Must've done that for hours...

Thanks Dunk. Won't lie, still was pretty chilly overnight. Still nice to be outside!

Thanks Dubz. Yeah I know, that's pretty sad lol. I can see why it's one of your favs - fun blade to use for sure. Need to find an excuse to use it again soon.

It's all good man. If it weren't for my cabin property, I wouldn't get much of an opportunity to use mine either.

Thanks for sharing what looks to have been an idyllic time..... That campsite belongs in an oversize coffe table book entitled "Perfect Camps I Have Enjoyed" ....... I can never get the kind of great sunset pix you shared......

Thank you for the kind words about the Machax......

Pease tell Hudson that he has a fan down south and if you would give him a pet for me.....

I always enjoy your posts..... Thanks....

Ethan

Thanks Ethan! I'm quickly becoming a big fan of my machax. It was my first extended use with your full-sized handles too; they were as comfortable as everyone says they are. I'll be pairing this with my 16 for my next trip as my unstoppable woods combo lol.

Oh, and Hudz says thanks for the scratch :)

Thanks! Make sure to posts pics after your trip!

Awesome photos!! Thank you for sharing, those sunset ones are so awesome.

Thanks Cap! Yeah after the storms blew over the sky really turned out beautiful.

Well that's a pretty amazing location. Just beautiful!

Thanks, it was. Definitely a place I plan on returning to.

Great pictures, Aikiguy. Thanks for sharing. I kind of feel like a proud uncle seeing everybody coming around to enjoy my favourite knife.

Haha thanks Doc... And you should tell your, uh, wife not to wear cotton socks in the winter :)

Thanks for the pictures. It is great that you can take your dog camping. I've found that there can be restrictions on dogs.

That hammock seems like a great idea. I generally don't enjoy sleeping on the ground.
