I'm trying to decide what options to buy as my initial purchase...

$500 for the Wicked Edge Field and Sport Pro - WE210 seems like the best deal. Am I wrong?

It basically includes the following upgrades from the $300 base model:
$150 ball joints
$70 800/1000 stones
$200 Gen 3 clamp (which has pros and cons).

It would cost $520 to buy the Gen1 with the ball joints and 800/1000 stones, $720 with the new clamp.

I really don't think I need all the stuff in the Pro Pack II for $750 (I already have that exact angle finder and some strops).

The $700 Gen 3 Pro system is tempting, but it is basically the same as the $500 portable, paying $200 for a fancy base I'm pretty sure I dont care about (but it is cool).

Specifically Looking for advice on the Wicked Edge systems, not others (been there). Thank you!

Keep an eye on the auction site..I got a very lightly used gen 1 with base 100,200,400,600,800,1000 diamonds, 1200, 1600ceramic, blank w/aluminum plattens, and a strop for $320. I added 3 more strops just to have for $120, I plan on upgrading the arms and I'm on the fence whether I want to get em with the gen 3 clamp..So if I go gen 3 clamp I'm in at $690 for everything..or if I just go with the arms $590. That gives me the extra coin I'd spent getting the pro pack 2 to get some more extras if I choose.

There were a few lightly used ones on there the other day.

Prefacing this with... I don't have the Gen. 3 clamp... my only input is, if you're looking at this in part from a money standpoint, is the Gen. 3 clamp necessary? While it may clamp a bit quicker, and maybe more effective on FFG (not sure) from a home user standpoint, I'm not sure it's needed.

If I had one, maybe I'd see why, but I haven't run across a situation, or read one where the Gen. 3 clamp did something the original couldn't. (I have read the opposite, mainly blades too thick for the Gen. 3 clamp.)

Just a little input to consider... maybe those who've used both can provide some insight?

It's certainly not needed for the home user... There's maybe a 10-15 second difference in mounting time and the gen 2 is more flexible. That being said I use the gen 3 daily and it is nice! I love mine. 😊

Where the Gen 3 really shines best is in the speed of repeat sharpening or touchups. With the angles recorded in your ledger, just move the dial of the Gen 3 to those settings and place your knife as it was positioned last time, then get after it. For me, this is the biggest advantage. I also like the storage rack underneath. Keeps everything at your fingertips...literally.

So are you saying the $200 base is worth it over the F&S model?
