Well, when I was in my accident, I had a Beaver Falls Tidioute 73, among a bunch of other knives, on the seat of my truck. A couple custom fixed blades from Scott Gossman and NWA knives. I was so afraid of the EMTs getting hurt by these knives I told them to be careful. No, they were not open or out of the sheath, but stuff does get bounced around in an accident. My LM Wave might be gone to the world for all I know, it was on the door pocket. All of these things can be replaced. I am very lucky to have my foot, if I wasn't wearing steel toe shoes I had just bought for myself, I would be down a foot. The shoe is still stuck in the pedal, won't come loose for the world. Can you imagine, that while I have my knife roll with most of my slipjoints in it on the kitchen table taking up space, I want these knives! I also want to look at my fixed blades and my Case Bose collaborations. Jeez, I know I have cabin fever bad, but this is the epitome of knife nut problems. About a dozen knife magazines cluttering a corner of the kitchen table. When I went into the hospital, they made my father sign a whole ton of forms for "all the knives I had in my pockets". He thought I had a whole arsenal of cutlery. Guess what, just my Case peanut and swayback gent. I guess they thought I was gonna terrorize the place from my ICU bed. My father grabbed everything from the truck and stuffed it all in two contractor bags that I have yet to go through. All knives and gear can be replaced. I told him from the ICU that I couldn't give a rat's butt about those knives, and he was astonished. I think it was the pain meds talking
.
It is all in good fun tracking down that "last" knife we "need". Even after all that happened, I am looking in the Exchange today. However, grab your loved ones and give them a squeeze and be thankful for the fact that you can participate in this hobby. Be thankful for the ones you have met and the friends you have made. I love the beauty of a well made knife, but all I want to do is sit next to a nice camp fire on a cool fall night, sipping coffee, looking at the moon and listening to the forest around me. It would be great to have my sweetie next to me, or at least my pups or a good friend. A knife would set off the romantic notion, but they are just tools. I am still a knife nut, no worries about that.
Someone told me recently don't cry over anything that cannot cry back for you. Very sound words indeed.
