Hi Everyone. I'm expecting my first XM in the mail tomorrow! It's an XM-24 Flipper Spanto. It comes with an Olive Drab Green scale and I've already ordered a Battleship Gray to go along with it. I'm really excited but a bit nervous of it's size. I have smaller hands but as my wife would say "sausage like fingers" so I think I should be okay. Truth be told, I really wanted a 3.5" but this one sort of fell into my lap so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I do have a question though about tip up versus tip down. Now, I understand that most of this is simply a matter of preference, but seeing as the knife has a flipper I was wondering if anyone has had it snag on their pocket upon deployment. My other framelocks are tip up and when I carry them the blade is snug against the seam of my right front pocket. I'm thinking I'm going to go this route for the XM, but I wanted to at least give it a shot tip down and see how I like it. Any feedback/experiences would be appreciated. Thanks and pics to follow next week!

Congrats! If you find the 24 too big for your liking you can always sell and/or trade it for a 3.5".

Regarding TU vs TD... as you said it's really mostly just a preference thing. I carry TU because I do like to have the spine of the blade up against the seam of the pocket... and I do like how drawing and deploying it is a one-step process as opposed to a two-step with TD--TU allows the index finger to be staged perfectly on the flipper as you pull it from the pocket... very natural and smooth (and fast) to deploy IMO. But, again, if someone is a TD person none of this may matter because they are more comfortable TD. So do what you like. If you are used to carrying TU you may find you still prefer that.

Congrats!!! Either way you won't have any issues with pulling it out of your pocket...

These words seem in direct contradiction to mine. Was that the intent?

No intent to contradict. People obviously carry either way and I've yet to read one way being consistently problematic. I read your comment as meaning that if he carries TD the way he pulls the knife out of his pocket could create an issue. Obviously, if there is some issue then I would expect the user would make the slight adjustment to remediate that issue. Perhaps a better wording would have been, "Either way you'll figure out how to pull it out of your pocket without issues"....

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I guess I'll just have to see what works for me. I guess the beauty of this "problem" is that I have options. I'll be sure to post pics once I get it!

Congrats on your 1st. Looks like you caught a huge one. Most prefer tip up as does myself but I've been known to carry them tip down if it comes to me that way, never had any snagging issues with either. If its too big or heavy you could trade it for a 3.5", or maybe even a 3".

mitch, congrats on the first! Glad it came much sooner than later. I've carried both on the left side and right side tip up, and have never had an issue with snagging. Now, let's see some pics :p

No snagging for me either. But I'm TU by choice, TD feels awkward for me since TU allows for natural feeling finger-on-flipper deployment.

I carry TU but, as has been mentioned, No problems either way. One observation I would offer is, No matter which way you carry IF/When you switch the "new" way will seem odd for a day or two and then it will be normal. Switch back and you will encounter the same adjustment to your muscle memory.
Either way works great. If the knife is NIB it will come TD. Easy switch (with a suggestion on how to do so )

Thanks everyone! The knife was NIB but came tip up (previous owner must have changed it). I think I'll go with this for now since that's what I'm used to, but at some point I will switch things up and see how it feels. Those instructions will come in handy for sure.

Without further ado, here is a pic. It's from my iPhone but you guys get the idea :D.

I forgot to post my thoughts...I'm extremely impressed! I was afraid the knife would be too big for me but it fits my hand like a glove. I think it's a keeper for sure. I think this is going to be the start of a beautiful relationship ;).

So after analyzing every square inch of the knife (the engineer side of me), I noticed that the g10 doesn't overhang on the liner like I've seen on some other examples...maybe XM-18's?? Is this something that was changed? Just curious about the design changes from generations.

Hi all,

I'm brand new to Hinderer knives also - but I just put money down on a new XM-18 w/blue G10. Paying $762, is that more, less, or average? Also do they normally not come in a box? Buying from a reputable local knife store so not worried about a knock off, but the store owner told me that they don't come in a box which I found odd.

Btw, I don't mean to hijack the thread with my questions, just working off my phone until I go into work for the next 12 hrs and can't log into BF - I can browse but can't post, very frustrating..

Congrats on yours, can't wait to pick mine up in a payday or so..!

I'm not going to talk about any pricing other than MSRP. As for boxes, most XMs do come with a box. However, one mans treasure another's...you get it.

Because its a zip-locking baggie, tactical peanuts and a white (usually non-descript) box they are sometimes discarded.
