fish fillet knife

There are many inexpensive knives suitable for panfish. A blade in the 4" range works well for that size fish and I would avoid anything in the 6"+ range. I like the vintage Rapala (Made by J Marttiini) that can be found for under $15 regularly on the secondary market as well as the Mora fillet knife. If you would like a folder, the Opinel Slim series (#10 is about the right size) are excellent and low cost. You can spend a lot of money on a fillet knife, and I have many times over, but you don't really need to.

Take a look at the schrade uncle henry 167UH. Great knife for the money and takes a great edge. Got mine around 25$ with sheath. I use it for porgy with no problem along with a small paring knife if you ned something smaller or need to remove scales

I have the Mora Fishing Comfort. Its a good size being small enough for sunfish and crappie, but can also handle bass and catfish in the 2-3 lb range. I fish for dinner one afternoon a week, so it sees some use and has stayed sharp with nothing but stropping on a double sided leather strop. One side rough loaded with green compound, the other smooth bare leather.

It replaced a half dozen Rapala and similar Walmart fillet knives that I had for many years. They never stayed sharp and didn't take a good edge. I have been very happy with the Mora, plus it has the same familiar handle as my trusty Companion MG. Easy to clean and grippy even when wet, cold, and covered in fish guts and blood.

The sheath is nothing to write home about, but it is functional and allows the knife to dry without trapping moisture on the blade. I don't carry it on my person anyway so its not a big deal. It only protects the blade for me.

It also makes a handy knife for boning out deer.

With a street price of ~$20 its hard to beat.
