I'm looking for some info on the steels used for fish hooks. My searches have resulted in vague answers like, high carbon, Vanadium, and stainless steel. I was hoping someone might know what alloys are typically used.

Thanks,
Travis

Thank you for the video. It didn't answer my question, but was informative none the less.

No problem! I imagine that each company has its own proprietary mix, or brand of steel that they use. Probably a "trade secret".

I believe that you can find wire and jigs used to make fishhooks. If you can find the wire you can probably find the grade.

What do you want to do with the fish hooks? If making damascus, you want carbon steel hooks. That will be something similar to W1/W2. Piano wire is probably the closest thing easily obtainable for making your own hooks.

I was thinking of doing some canister damascus at some point, and I'm looking for something that will contrast with the 1095 powder I have.
