Fish knife

I like Marttiini's myself. There is a custom maker that I believe lives near me that I'm probably going to at buy one or more of his ATS-34 fillet knives from soon named Milt. Heres a link to one of his threads.

Looks like he hasn't posted since last year but I contacted him hoping he's still making them.

Another descent choice would be the Buck Clearwater with Sandvik steel. Also Phil Wilson's fillet knives.

I've always used Rapala fillet knives and they've done fine for me. Any cutting that requires more strength and less flexibility gets done by an Old Hickory boning or slicing knife. You could probably manage with using just one blade but I like to use two.

The buck mentioned is ok and have a look at the Russ krommer CRKT fillet knives, cheap and pretty good.

Don't scale with your fillet knife, have something cheap to do it......scaling will kill the thinned edge.

A stick, 3 beercaps and screws make the best scaler ever......most guys fishing will have a phillips on something(sak etc) to tighten bail screws etc.
So screws and a few caps in the bottom of the tacklebox take up no room.
And you can throw it away instead of cleaning it.

Get a cheap scaler. I can recommend the Warther fishing knives, available through their website. They are S35V and work great in the kitchen. For a stiffer knife, Fallkniven makes a couple of fishing knives in VG10.

Thank you guys! Your tips are really helpful for me. I will try my luck with Fallkniven and I will definitely buy a fillet knife. You are right Brad, I shouldn't scale and fillet with the same knife. Typical rookie mistake...;)

I agree, the Rapala knives filet well. Anything requiring more strength, and the Old Hickory slicing knives get the nod.
