Hey all. I was looking through a book I have and wanted to try this

So I got this going

With these guys "helping"

And commenced to cutting with this

I then shaved them down further so they are fairly pliable and have them soaking in the tub tonite. I'll try and start weaving them tomorrow.

Anyone build one before? Any tips/tricks?

Interested to see how this comes out..and how well it works..according to the diagram dont see what keeps them from swimming out the entrance..but hey im open to anything.

Cool. I'm also interested in seeing the final result. I think that the trap is meant to be placed in a stream so the current would prevent the fish from escaping.

I've seen a variation of that design that had additional sticks pointing inwards at the opening. Some of the bigger fish may squeeze in but might not be able to squeeze back out.

That's the idea.

I was responding to tdc rangemaster who said:

You should try reading before you post sarcastic comments

ive also seen traps similar to this made with chicken wire or something like yours designed for catfish! Catfish cant swim backwards so once they move in they cannot get out.

I read the entire thread and knew what you were responding to and my post was intended as a confirmation of your response to tdc, not a sarcastic slight.

I have the same book as the OP (or at least a book that has the same diagram) and your response to tdc is correct - the intent/idea is that the current will keep trapped fish in the basket. How well the current accomplishes that task would, I expect, depend on the strength of the current and the fish. I have read about this type of trap, but have not yet made or used one, so I can only speak to the theory or idea behind it.

I see how the brevity of my response could come off as glib or sarcastic and am sorry for that. Truly, that was not my intent. Feel free to send me a PM or email if you want to discuss.

No worries. I'm sorry that I responded inappropriately. Just a simple misunderstanding. The unfortunate thing about communicating in this venue is it is easy to infer meaning or intent that isn't there.

milani74 - this looks like a fun project. It looks like your sons are having a great time. I look forward to seeing how your basket comes out.

As an aside, I like your boys' LifeGear flashlights. I first learned about these on mneedham's Condor II thread a month ago. I got one for each of my kids for Christmas and they love them... I could do without the whistles in the house though.

The idea is once the fish swims in it is constricted by the trap and cannot turn around to exit .more fish stack into the trap and they are all heading downstream and packed like sardines in the trap
Great idea to keep those guys and yourself busy

Ya I love them too. I got them and a few inexpensive Marttinni knives. Cut a piece of paracord to fit them baldaric style, and attached both the light and the knife sheath on. Thats their mini kit for woods stuff. They got to practice the whistle at first, but then I told them that its for emergencies only. I do let them practice sometimes, although its always outside!
