Fishbellies!

It's been in the low 80's here, a bit unseasonably warm, but I'm not complaining. I graduated from crutches to a cane last week, and now I finally got down to the little lake by our house for some cane pole fishing. Even able to carry my own pole, Karen carried the folding chairs.

The best thing though, is that I finally got to use my Devin Thomas damascus peanut on a fish belly!:D A nice fat perch.

I'd already guessed the damascus was neat stuff, but it zipped open that fish like it was magic. Karen caught a nice perch, and a large hamburger size bluegill for the pot, and I got to use the peanut on some more fishbellies. By the end of the morning, we had dinner, so it was home with the catch. After each use, I just swished the knife around in the lake, and wiped it off on the leg of my jeans. Home, it got some dish soap and brush and a drop of 3-In-one in the joints. If the damascus was developing any kind of patina, I don't see it. The rain drop pattern is still vivid, and shows no sign of graying, other than whats already in the low spots.

Thanks Jamie! It's now been Christianed in the old time jackknife way.

Carl.

I'm jealous. Still haven't got to wet a line yet this year. The rain has been unrelenting for what seems like weeks. if all goes well I'll make it out to the lake on Sunday. CV Peanut in pocket of course.

Glad you're on the up-and-up Carl and congrats on catching dinner.

I'm jealous too...wet a line a few times, but....

Congrats Carl. I bet dinner was good.

You know- as I was riding this afternoon, I had the thought that it should be just about time for you to be getting a hook wet. :)
I must say, I'm a little jealous as well. I'm off friday though, and the weather is spose to be fantastic, so we'll see what I can get into. :p

Nice,Im using my peanut more and more i must admit. That DT stuff is the ultimate.Glad to hear your healing up and getting around.

Y'all must have girl hands to use those peanuts to filet fish. I at least need a medium trapper ;)

I actually used my #8 Opinel. Wish it had a larger handle, or maybe I should just say longer.

Glad to hear you're out doing things you like to do. Mending takes some time though. Freat use of your new peanut!

That is awesome Carl! I haven't fished freshwater really much at all this year and when I look out at http://www.warmfly.com/ and see folks catching 'gills like this one, it makes me wishful off getting my turn, too!

You must not be familiar with blue gills or what i always just called perch. They are small, but fight like the dickens.Much fun with lighter tackle and cane poles.A small clip blade is perfect to clean them.

Carl,

Awesome. So glad to hear of your graduation from crutches. I know it is a great cause for celebration :D. Good to hear things are looking up.

Oh, yeah! We my friend takes me out on Palmer that is usually the main reason. We try to finagle a little bass fishing in too but there is usually a fish fry involved and that requires the perch. I'm not an expert at fileting them out so that's probably why I think I need a larger knife than a peanut.

3 5/8ths seems to be my sweet spot. But I've also got XXL hands. (My hands make a 4 1/2" Kerry Hampton Bose pattern Back Pocket look small.)
