this weekend I went to a friend's fishing cabin in the woods. they have a well stocked pond in the backyard.

the friend is along time family friend who has been fishing and hunting for 50 or more years. This guy is a consumate woodsman. he taught me a whole lot about fishing. we went out in his boat and quietly paddled around softly teaching me some tricks.

I caught a 2 pound bass it was great fun.
I used to go fishing when I was a kid but as I got older stopped. it was so helpful for my survival skills to learn fish behavior.

I learned types of local fish and how they react to noise and different baits. it is real helpful to know the type of fish in your environment. so in a situation you can dig for worms or look for crickets and fish accordingly.

sometimes you think survival is all about you. but it is about knowing nature or being part of nature. you are interacting with the whole not just you taking from it.

I have hooks in my mini, but I haven't thought about practicing with them until now. :o

so much to learn :D

I agree, Chris and that's something I hugely advocate - take that bug-out bag/survival bag/kit and get out and use it.

You don't know how many people have a flint & magnesium bar in their pack and have no clue how to use it. Or half the other goodies they have packed. Especially emergency medical supplies.

Way before TSHTF everyone needs to get skills and knowledge. You won't be able to jump on the net and find out how to use sutures or an Epi-Pen or a snake bite kit.

Learn to use the goodies now before you need them and it's too late.

thanks Xo for responding

I guess I could have worded this post better.

It was more like fish-animal-nature behavioral knowledge over a bunch of gadgets that you don't know how to use.

This old Mississipian woodsman taught me so much about how i should behave in the woods.

1. don't clunk the oar on the boat
2. don't walk heavily around the pond or fishing area the fish will retreat to the deep center
3. be conscious of the type of bait and what you are fishing for
4. determination
5. paddle lightly and slowly
5. relax and enjoy don't waste your caloric expenditure

contrary to what people might think. he isn't a survivalist like he doesn't go around saying stuff like "I am a survivalist" like I do for instance:o !

he has a few guns and a few knives a case pocket knife and a gerber caper which I gave him a few years ago for taking me hunting a bunch of times and teaching me so much. he is not so much into gear his fishing poles are cheap. but he KNOWS THE LAND inside and out.

I feel I went the other road buy great gear and slowly learn how to use it and even more slowly get to know the land and its animals I think I went the wrong route but it was my ony choice being a city boy without a teacher/guide to help me along. I learned the hard way. but I still learned/ing.
