Hello All
I live about an hour away from the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, and try to get up there as often as I can to hike / hunt. Recently I was bitten by the Fly Fishing bug, which only makes me want to go more often.
I have mostly done day hikes, but am considering a few trips that would require leaving the truck behind and packing a tent for a several day hike / fishing trip to a few of the more remote lakes.
I have never really worried about bears, given that I was usually in some of the more travelled areas or was armed (hunting). Now however, I think carrying a rifle or shotgun might be a good idea. (Since pistol carry in Canada is out)
My question is this... How do you carry a gun in the woods / mountains if hunting is not your intent?
I'll be carrying some gear (I'm pretty minimalist) a fly rod and now a gun (probably a Marlin Guide Gun, quite short and handy) I use a sling over one shoulder while hunting, but am not a fan of carrying a rifle across my back with a strap as something always seems to be jabbing me.
I think an ideal solution would be an actual 'rifle holster' that held the gun across my back... anyone ever seen / used one? Think arrow quiver across your back, but for a gun instead.
Come to think of it, bowhunters must have had to solve this problem. I've heard of bowhunters who carry a shotgun for backup, if you've got a bow in your hands, how do you carry?
Any thoughts?
Thanks for your time.
