What breaking strain fishing line would you put in your survival kit?
I have put 3 small hooks and 3 large hooks in my kits with 15 feet of 2o lb line.

Sounds right to me but I would add another item. Put in a few small jigs. I found out that in cold weather it can be hard to find natural baits. The insects, bugs, worms etc. just aren't around. A few small crappy jigs will do the trick. Pklus, I would also add one or two split lead sinkers along with one bobber. I have found that all of this can fir in a 35mm film can with the line wrapped around the outside.

Hi,
IMHO I would put another 30yds at least of 8lb line with it too. It dosent weigh anything and if your bait isnt floating or behaving naturally in the water due to the heavy line it could mean the differance between supper and hunger.

Dartanyon,

It all depends on what fish you are most likely to catch. Back in PA I had my kits packed to catch small panfish (Sunnies, Bluegills, Crappies etc.) These fish attack any bait and live close to the bank.

Here in Brazil they use what I had always considered deep sea tackle for fresh water. The stuff iIhad in my kits would barely do to catch the bait. Sounds like a fish story, I know, but here fresh water fish look like pre-historic monsters.

Your best bet is to go fishing, find out what is easy to catch and pack for that. Then try out your fishing kit and see how well you do. Mac

Where I fish, the trouts weigh probably less than 3 lbs. My favorite ultralight fishing line is 4 to 6 lbs with No. 10 or No. 12 hooks and Salmon eggs.

I get too much line breakage if I go under 4 lbs. If I go "heavy" to 10 lb line, I never lose a hook, but also, the fish see the line and I get no bites. This in high, clear and cold mountain streams of the California's Sierra Nevadas.

So what's the answer for you? Look at how much your fish weigh. If they break your line and dissappear, your line wasn't strong enough.

Only 3 hooks? Good heavens. I've got a hundred(about) yard spool of 6 lb. Spider Wire, 50 assorted small hooks, dozens of small split shots, some hooks on monofilament leader, and am scheming to add either flies or artificial lures for when I can't find live bait.

We have all discovered the sub one foot telescoping/collapsing spinning rods, haven't we?
