My son started trout fishing a couple years ago, but he doesn't have a dedicated fishing knife. When I search the web for trout knives, I find the small rigid trout & bird knives. What about the long, flexible blade fillet knives? Would a trout fisherman use both? Would a fillet knife be a good overall choice for trout?

I use a Fallkniven F2. About 4.5" very nice and sharp VG-10 blade, grippy rubber handle, kydex sheath. It's over $100 and has a stiff, fillet shaped blade, but it works good for cleaning trout. It fillets Ok. An excellent knife. If you wanted something less expensive and very functional, I would look at the Buck Silver Creek line of fishing knives or their new Clearwater line. Those appear to have the flexible fillet blade that you're asking about; however, they are all 6" long or longer, and that would not be the optimal length for cleaning trout. I think you'll be hard pressed to find anything under 6" that flexes like a regular fillet knife. That Fallkniven is the closest thing I've found.

You can also buy a cheap filet knife at the store that will do well, and be very cheap.

The truth is it works with either one!
My fishing buddy prefers a cheap flexible knife and I use the modified Fällkniven F2 in my avatar.
We both get our trouts filleted with respective knife.

I believe Mora makes smaller flexible filletknives, but I have used their rigid stainless models and they also works.
A Leatherman multitool often comes in handy, when a hook needs to get out or if the equipment needs fixing.

The Martiini flexible fillet knife is getting good reviews among anglers in my country and I have one, but I prefer the rigid knife.

Tight Lines!
