Hi I'm finally getting around to putting together a fishing kit for my camping/survival bag and have some questions. I was looking to purchase a strong fishing line so if needed I will not be loosing a fish to broken line, however I wanted the line to also double as a snare line. What would be a good Lb test weight to use for both fishing and snaring ? Also what material would best be used, braided, Monofilament, etc? Lastly how much of the line should I carry? I was looking to keep my fishing kit in an altoids tin, or if anybody else has suggestions I'm willing to listen.

Thank You

There is only one answer to the fishing line "spectra" Get your self a 65lb line which is thinner and has more flex then a regular mono 20lb line. It also have no memory and could easy last 10-15 years in a tin. I know of a few guys that still use spectra line from over 12 years ago for fishing off a kayak. You would need to practice some new knots that work better with spectra. But for me I would look or consider nothing else. If you intend to stay more in small creeks where the fish is about 1-3lb try the 20lb spectra. A good and safe brand to pick up would be power pro. which you can find at many sporting stores.

I have 50' of 30# Spiderwire in mine, along with 40' of Trilene - both on metal bobbins. I figure the Spiderwire can be used for fishing and sewing. I haven't tried it for snares yet. Also in the kit are assorted hooks, split shot, 3 crappie jigs, 1 pre-rigged worm, and two bobbers (strike indicators from my fly fishing gear). I've been toying with adding a couple flies, but haven't gotten around to it. All that fits in a tube about the size of a Bic lighter. Crappy cell phone pics:

just keep in mind, if you don't have any experience with spectra braid line, it is much more likely to cut you if it is under heavy load. It is generally less wear resistant, and can cut itself easily if looped back over itself (if that makes sense) the upside is, since it is much thinner, you can carry more for a given strength. Finns is another good brand, and USA made iirc.
Not sure how well, braid would do as a snare, you would have to definitely rig it as a lifting type snare I'd think to keep the animal from biting off the line. It would also likely cut the animal. since it's floppy, it tangles easily, and won't hold itself into a loop like mono-filament.
You could carry some of each, which allows you to use the mono as a leader, which would help in catching toothed fish that might bite off the braided line as well.

I defin have a lot to consider now. However I think I will take gadgetgeek advice and carry both types of line with me just in case.
Thank you

I only carry Spectra line, but only use it for sewing/fishing which it's clearly superior to mono, for snares I carry thin stainless wire- much more suitable for snares than monofilament

Don't forget what Sasha said as well. learn the albright knot, and other braid knots. standard "blood" knots just slip out.

I carry a small piece of snare wire[4'-6'] and use that as a snare leader on the end of the mono.--KV

you might consider a cylindrical tube, that can be used to underhand cast....a small chunk of 550 cord through the cap for a wrist thong to so you can hang on to it, and line wrapped on the outside of the container...the tube gives you extra purchase if you hook a large fish....there is room to store different diameters of line, and secure with a wrap of tape or section of bicycle inner tube.... I used a large pill vial for mine

I use some 40lb Fireline I got at a big box store on clearance and it does work pretty well for snares but it will cut you under load. I like it because I will not lose something because the stuff is old as age has almost no effect. I would try getting a bit in a few different thicknesses and try them out. Also the braided type line comes in so many types it can be a pain to decide what you want ,but at least now they make it in round ,not just a strange flat braid.
