Hey Guys,

What is the difference between monofilament and fluorocarbon fishing line?

What are the advantages?

I have heard that fluorocarbon line breaks down a lot easier from sun light.

Thanks,

Geoff

Flourocarbon is invisible under water. It has less stretch and sinks. It's also more abrasion resistant.

Also, flourocarbon is pretty much unaffected by UV.

Mono reportedly will loose up to 20% of rated breaking strength after 2 hours in water due to it's tendency to absorb water. In addition,Mono is adversely affected by heat and UV exposure. The 'stretch' factor of mono becomes an issue when fishing deep or making long casts. Rod action becomes more critical using Mono. In addition to being less visible and having greater abrasion resistance, Fluorocarbon does not have any of the aforementioned characteristics. Both are nearly identical in terms of knot strength.

Fireline(black),or clear mono is all I ever use. I don't seem to catch as many with any other colored line.
YMMV.

Not all mono and fluoro is created equal...

Mono

(+) Pros
-Cheap
-More supple in general compared to fluoro thus taking knots better
-Stretches more. This may be a con if you use a slower action rod
-Less spool memory
-More available in a variety of poundage

(-) Cons
-Degrades in UV. Becomes opaque, hard
-Line stretch. If this is an issue use gelspun lines

Fluoro

(+)Pros
-Low visibility in water (some say totally invisible)
-Sinks. Depending on usage this may be a con.
-Does not degrade in UV

(-)Cons
-EXPENSIVE
-High memory, low suppleness so be careful tying knots

For years I've used mono lines and I still do. My use for fluoro is mostly as a bite leader when casting lures. Mono is cheap so loading 200m-300m onto a surfcasting rod is a lot cheaper. For in shore saltwater and freshwater I've converted almost exclusively to gel spun lines. I prefer fused lines compared to braids. They last so long, has low memory, floats (important to me), takes a bimini hitch well. Only con is low abrasion resistance which is why I still use mono shock and bite leaders. There's very little stretch so one can over strike if that makes any sense.

G'day Loneriderz

For what it's worth, it makes sense to me :D

Kind regards
