I went camping recently. Got my fishing license while I was there since there was a spare rod. Caught some a couple of small ones that got thrown back. But reminded me how much fun fishing is.

pulled out my old fishing gear probably about six years old. Is there any maintenance you'd suggest I do to my fishing reel that's been sitting around all these years? Thanks for the info.

New line, carefully pop it apart and clean out the dust, dirt, and grime. A little light oil or lithium grease on the moving parts (NOT the drag!) and put it back together.

This, of course is assuming it's a cheaper model. Expensive reels should be brought to the shop for cleaning unless you know what you're doing.

The main thing is replacing the old line with new, as Homebru mentioned.

It wouldn't hurt to replace any worn out parts while you have it apart. Depending on the type of reel, you should be able to find replacement parts online.

What I have done is to reduce the entire reel into a heap of parts and soaking every thing (except for the drag washers) in petrol for a few days, before washing off with dishwasing soap and rinsing well.

You should then have bare metal parts. Grease and oil every thing well and your reel should be as good as new.

I like silicon grease in my reels.
It doesn't get gummy/thick in the cold.
If it is a spinning reel, one where the spool of line does NOT move, make sure the roller, that guides the line onto the spool, spins freely.
A good squirt of WD40 and rub with a clean rag won't hurt the outside either.
