So, I never thought that the reel made much difference, Until I bought a Pflugger. OMG this reel is frigg'in amazing... I have several set-ups that were always my go-tos. I bought a pflugger 5:2:1 gear ratio, 10 bearing drive and this reel casts like a million bucks. I will never buy a rod and reel combo set-up again...

Spinning or casting? I have about 60 rod and reel combos ( some I made up others bought as combos). I find there are many different types of reel/rod/line combos that work differently during different types of fishing. I must admit I still use and like some of my 30 year old cheap combos....lol....

the ones I have are spinning reels, I have always used rod and reel combos like Ugly stick and shaksperes, but now I bought a Nemo rod( all hand made and wrapped, titanium eyelets milled aluminum reel seat.) off ebay. The guy makes them out of Texas. They are reel nice. I got a Abu Garcia reel comming and I hope its as good as the Pflugger I just bought.

Next step is a baitcaster. I recommend Shimano. I have the Curados. Match it with a Shimano Compre rod and youll have a very nice outfit.

I am a spinning reel guy too. I have five fly rods and three baitcasters, but spinning is my go to reel type.

I'm still stuck in a rut. I've been using the old Mitchell 300's for about 35 years. Not the new cheap plastic versions though.... My go to rod is still an old Eagle Claw that I got when I was about 12 years old, which was about 38 years ago too. I did finally break down and buy a new LamiGlass rod a few years back, but its still hanging up with the tags on it.

Your Plugger sounds very nice. Its amazing how much difference nice equipment can make, even if ya don't catch anymore fish

All of my stuff is Shimano and Daiwa.

Those old Mitchell 300's are tanks. I can't imagine a more durable reel ever being made. My dad still has two that he uses for catfishing, 50lb braid, on couple of old med action fiberglass rods that I can't remember who the maker is. Those reels are more than 30 years old. I'm 35 and they were well used as far back as I can remember. My cousin has one that his grandpa used too, it's also at least 30 years old. I took it apart, cleaned it, and re-greased it last week. It's not as smooth as the multi-bearing wonders on the market today, but considering that it has NO bearings, just gears, it's pretty darn smooth. The 300 is definitely one of the "They don't make them like they used to!".

new chronarch from shimano is really nice. almost all my reels are shimano my nicest outfit is a shimano stella 2500 along with a cumulus

Pflugger make some really nice reels. I like them and Shimano reels too. I've been looking at getting a new lightweight rod and reel.

What model did you get?

I was looking at a US Reel spinning reel with the large spool for farther casting. Does anyone have any experience with them?

I bought a Nemo med/heavy rod on ebay ( hand made rods, the guy is out of Texas) and a Pfluger 6735. It has 10 bearings and titaniumlip on the spool. It also came with an additional spool. That is a cool addition, so you can have two different test weights. This Pfluger isa the best reel I have ever had. I also bought a Abu Garcia, which is a good reel but doesnt hold a flame to the Pfluger. The Nemo rod is the best rod I have ever had. It is a '7.0 med/heavy rod with 11 translucent hand wrapped eyelets, turned alumnium reel seat and solid hard wood handle. This rod, though brand new is one to pass down to family, somewhat Iconic... pull them up and check them out.

Those rods look pretty sweet! I contacted him about some shorter handle lengths. Hopefully I'll be fishing with one soon. A good reel w/good line makes all the difference in fishing enjoyment for me.

I bought another one with a smooth redwood handle. When it arrived the reel seat was broken, It was an easy fix but he insisted I return it and he replace it. Good customer service...This rod casts an 1/8 ounce jig a mile. A good reel makes a huge difference but I never new how big of a part the rod was. The 11 eyelets keeps the line smooth as silk...

I looked at that rod on ebay. It says it is All 24 Ton Grade Graphite(equal to IM6). Nothing wrong with IM6 rods I have some but they are usually the cheap rods.As fas as 24 ton grade , I have no idea what that means.

The modulus rating in graphite rods is just like the steel types used in knives, there's always a new flavor coming out. IM6 graphite just like 440C stainless steel or 1095 carbon. Yeah, there's newer stuff out there, but is it really that much better? Or do you really need better performance, maybe that's a better way to put it? 15 yeas ago, the expensive rods were made from IM6. Many of the premium rods like St. Croix, Lamiglass, and G. Loomis don't give a modulus rating on their rods. It's just not that important.

It may not be important for a well known fishing rod producer like St.Criox with there $150 rods. But this guy seems to be just getting started or not. All he is doing is trying to best describe his product. As far as performance, I buy a rod for its performance and if I can afford to buy better performance I will. I would bet any Pro angler out there is looking for the next best thing in performance, so yes I think performance is important.

If performance wasn't importanr we'd all be still fishing with cane poles( love an old cane pole, but lets face it jigg'in with an '11 foot pole is a bit hard.)

Try getting into baitcasters. I absolutely hated them at first(birdsnests....), but then it's hard for me to use any thing else. I recently got my self an Abu Garcia Revo SX with a Abu Garcia Vendetta 6'6 rod and everything about it is dream-like. To me, its like the Zero Tolerance 0551 of the fishing industry.

IM6 any thing is a huge step up from uglies and shakespeare.

Good luck with your new outfit.
