I just bought my first fishing set up of my own and my fishing license with my own money :). i cant decide what knife to buy just so i can use it solely for fishing. with that in mind i was wondering what do you guys carry when you go out fishing. traditional or modern? your opinions & thoughts. pictures of your set up wuld be nice too :).

I love getting out with a fishing rod in hand!

During the years, I have used all sorts of knives on fish, from folders, multi-tools and Mora knives to kitchenknives and even Bowieknives.

As a user of Fällkniven knives, I couldn't resist when they offered the older F2 at a 50% discount.
I bought two for the price of one and gifted the second knife to my longtime fishing buddy.

This discontinued model has a 4,5 mm thick spine that tapers towards the tip.
The new model is thinner at 2,5 mm thickness and probably better for slicing.

As I use the thicker F2 as an allaround fixed blade for both fishing and minor wood processing, I like the thicker spine.
The blade doesn't flex like a filleting knife, but I like the stiffness.

The size is perfect for any situation around the fishing site, as it carries comfortably in the belt and at 4,8" bladelenght isn't bulky.
As it is rehandled by me, I could reground the ricasso and get 10 mm extra bladelenght.
The original thermorun handle is shown to the right in this pic.

At the pommelend I have made a threaded extension to the tang and bolted the stag to the knife.

In this way I got a personal and functional fishing knife, that is a first choice on any fishing day.

Spyderco Pacific Salt Serrated

I am about to start bass fishing again within the next few weeks and I plan on having my Pacific Salt, BK-14 and Salt Dragonfly in my backpack.

I usually carry this little bird and trout by John Doyle when I'm fishing. I've used it on everything from little brook trout to 20+lb. salmon and its such a nice little knife I EDC it most days. If you want a beater to keep in your tackle box as a spare go with a Dexter Russel Cut and Gut, stainless, spoon end, "sani-safe" handle, and CHEAP! Sub $10 range over on the big auction site, so if you drop it over board or lose it no big deal.

I carry a SAK myself. I mostly do catch and release, so I don't do much fish cleaning. The knife is there for other incidental cutting.

A small bird & trout fixed blade is a good choice. It depends on the size of the fish. The Mora is a very sound recommendation as well. The Fallkniven F1 would also be a very good choice. Basically any knife (something with a 3" or so blade) will do that you are nimble using as far as I'm concerned.

Ive generally use whatever I'm carry seeing as i fish everyday
But i like my Kershaw needs work its assisted and something about the straight edge works well fir scaling crappie. But a fixed blade is a whole lot easier to clean after use.

Serrated sounds like the way to go but as far as cutting up bait fish they do not excel. At least for me they didn't anyway. They grab what you're trying to cut rather than cut it, especially with smaller chores. I'll stick to whatever folder I have on me at the time and an ESEE 3 plain edge for bait cutting chores.
