I contacted Fishwolf after reading THIS inquiring if he would make me something similar and how much it would cost me. Well here we are not long after that initial PM and I have my custom made neck knife (although I pocket carry my small fixed blades). I call it "Little Big Blade". I basically wanted another izula, only with some personal touches. I asked for something with a similar size, little bigger blade, and full convex ground spear point. This is what I received in the mail today:
And next to an Izula
Now the first thing I did was put a little forced patina on it. The steel is O1 and I live in a pretty humid place, so I thought it best to be safe. After that I took it outside to give it a little use just to see how it felt in hand. I really just BS'd around with it, cutting up some brush, messing around with some weeds, and cutting some zip-ties and rope I had been putting off doing. I plan to update this after more extended use, but I was able to get a pretty good feel for how the knife performed.
In hand:
It is almost the exact size as the izula, but with a much larger cutting surface (which is what I wanted). It is a little heavier than the izula and the shorter handle is not AS comfy, but it is still very easy to use and it had to be shorter to keep it in my size requirement. Fishwolf's cord wrap is very good, and the kydex is also top notch. The knife came to me fairly sharp, but I still had to strop it to get it to where I wanted it. After use a quick strop was all it took to make it super sharp again (which is why I wanted the convex grind).
Overall I am VERY pleased with the blade. It is exactly what I requested, and I couldn't ask for anything more than that. Now it is certainly worth mentioning that my custom made izula eater was not only affordable, but downright cheap. Now I realize Jimmie (fishwolf's name) is a new maker, but this guy is giving away his talents! This knife was $60 shipped to my door, kydex and all. For something made exactly to my liking, I think that is more than fair.
I should also mention that Jimmie is an awesome guy to work with. He was very polite and patient in working on my requests, so much so that I have already started working with him on 2 more designs that he is about to start making for me.
I am no photographer, but I did the best I could.
MY RATINGS:
Fit and Finish 9/10 (one TINY blemish on blade kept it from 10)
Ergos 8/10 (my fault for wanting the knife so short, but none the less)
Blade Shape 10/10 (not fair to rate since it was my requested design)
Sheath 9/10 (very good retention, does not have drain hole, nor did I ask for one.... should have though)
Customer Service 10/10 (Jimmie has been fast to respond and update me)
Overall: 9/10 (only because I wish I had asked for it to be another 1/4" longer)
If you like what you see, give Jimmie (fishwolf on JD & BF, or www.fishwolfsbk.com) a shout, tell him you read my review (maybe he'll give me a discount on the next knife
) and see if he can make something for you.
He's a good guy who does good work, not much more anyone can ask for than that.
If you have any questions feel free to ask!
