Jerry Fisk makes knives from similar materials and Damascus patterns on a rare occasion such as the beautiful Ramhorn pieces he made for the Arkansas Show, but has never made a themed designated set of knives such as the “Gambler’s Set”.

This unique presentation Fighter and Boot knife are repersenitive of what the gentleman gambler of “the day” would carry in his belt and in his boot as “back up” as he visited the more ominous gambling houses of the period.

As was written;
To the 19th century mind, the Bowie knife was considered almost more deadly than a pistol. It was said that a pistol might misfire, or the shooter may miss the target, but that a Bowie knife in skilled hands was certain death. Though some people today are quick to chime in with sayings like "Don't bring a knife to a gunfight", in the 19th century it was "Don't forget to bring a knife to a gunfight!"

Both knives are from the same billet of Jerry’s 1080 & 15n20 Wolf’s Tooth with “X”s pattern Damascus and will have double stainless, engraved and gold inlayed fighter guards. The blades measure 9 ½” and 5 ½” and have chisel ground clips. The OAL should come in at about 14 1/2" and 9 1/2".

The choils are a little different than Jerry’s norm, as he went back old school for him as the choil is rounded in to allow for “choke up” by the finger on the bottom of the ricasso. The tangs will be fitted with knobby textured amber stag handles.

Jerry is working to have these knives on display for the Blade Show.

Here are some photos. I will post more as the pieces progress.

As a big fan of matched sets I applaud this undertaking - should be stunning when done.

Nice looking pair, What no matching gamblers dagger?

A Dagger? Not bad.;) A three knife set. Boy, that gambler would be loaded for bear:eek:

Thanks Roger.

Keith, you are correct. The set to the left. And a similar smaller set for the boot knife.

Yep, Bob we all better start saving our money for October.....

I love fisk's work and anxiously await to see finished pieces. stag on left

Jerry's got both ready to engrave and inlay. Remarkable job matching the blades and the stag.

Kevin, That's a great pair of knives from Jerry. I really like the Wolf's tooth damascus. I'm sure that they will be even better when engraved. Jim Treacy

Thanks, Don, Chuck and Jim.

The purpose was to create a set of fighting or personnel protection pieces with classic lines yet elegant and that didn't just look similar, but looked made as a set. Two different styles of knives but yet the same so to speak.

I could tell Jerry realized early on that it would not be easy to make two damascus blades very different in size, basically the same in shape and pattern. And even further, fit and match two sets of amber stag in texture and color. I think he was a little nervous as he wasn't sure I knew it wasn't going to be easy.
But he really pulled it off. More than one has told me that it looks as he shrunk the larger blade to the smaller.
I'm very happy with the way this set has come along.

Jerry should stop right now!!!!

Engraving will not add, will only take away, IMHO. The cleanliness and beauty of the stag and steel needs no additional ornament.

Best Regards,

Thanks Guys for the kind words.

STeven, you are not wrong as this piece no doubt looks great as is, but Jerry almost has to and has gone forward with the engraving.

A set of this magnitude and being "a one of" warrants Jerry's full spectrum of talent and artistic ability.
If not, the second thought from anyone familiar with Jerry's work would always be "why did he not engrave it" as it's come to be expected of Jerry's upper end and/or unique pieces.

The same can be said IMO of Steve Dunn's work.

However, I find this an interesting subject.

Any other opinions as to whether this piece should or should not be engraved are encouraged and welcomed?

Humbly IM in agreement with Steven's HO

What's next? IMHO the combo just need a beautiful matching sheath/s and that's all

I think this set of knives already exhibits " Jerry`s full spectrum of talent and artistic ability." Not every one of Jerry`s knives needs to be of "presentation grade."
Matter of fact ,I think this set as is, would be the centerpiece of many if not most collections.
I have a strong feeling that the issue of matching custom sheaths is already being addressed.
Great job Jerry and Kevin!
