Well I got the hatchet/hawk bug from reading these mod thread so I went to Menard's and picked up a Fiskars hatchet for $20. I wanted to go with a Cold Steel Trail Hawk but have not been able to find one locally and was advised to be careful about internet buying because of the grind on the CS.

I'm sure it is sharp enough to hack through some brush, but it does not hold a candle to my Gransfors, not that they are even in the same class. But I am a firm believer that you will get hurt faster with a dull tool than a sharp one.

What has everyone been doing (if anything) with the grind on the Fiskars?

As a side note, I am decent at sharpening most knives but I am new to hatchets and axes.
Thanks
John

i think that most people have said that they take off the shoulder on the bevel, making the edge a bit thinner and cutting better.

you can sharpen a hatchet/axe about the same as a knife, its just a bit harder to work it on a stone. when i use a stone, i usually take the stone to the axe instead of the axe to the stone. so i move the stone along the axe and keep the axe still.

I use a small fine stone by Spyderco. Work it along the edge, like I was sharpening a scandi bevel (which it essentially is). I can get it sharper than some of my knives. Well past shaving sharp. I haven't even messed with the shoulder. No need. It works great out of the box. If I was to put a convex edge on it, maybe get rid of the shoulder. But it ain't broke, so I'm not gonna fix it...
