I bought a pretty beaten up fiskars machete that needed some peening and reprofiling. I did that. Removed some rust. then I wanted to get the original black finish on it again. I tried permatex rust treatment. It's a little rough looking but mostly black. I was thinking of some light sanding to improve the finish. Why you might ask... I dont know, I Just needed a project. Any suggestions on how to work with permatex rust treatment? Is sanding a bad idea?

I will just use regular woodworkers paste wax and wipe down my machetes with it and that will keep rust at bay.

I’m pretty sure that should work after using the rust remover.

Curious...why are you concerned with the finish on a thoroughly used machete? If it doesn't have active red rust on it, there's little need to be concerned with re-coating it in the original finish. Just hit it with some clear spray lacquer if you want to keep the rust off, but otherwise, just use the tool and that'll be enough to keep it in good working condition. Rust can't stick around when the tool is in service. :)
