I do almost no camping anymore. For the most part my blade collecting now is all about use on my property or ‘just because I want it so I can look at it from time to time’. I don’t worry too much anymore about ‘how’s it gonna carry’ or whether it’ll fit great on a pack. For the most part it's all about ‘can it make my life easier doing maintenance around the place’. I started with a 9 and then got several. Love the 9 for all the reasons you all know from your own use. Then I got a Cincinnati 4 and almost stopped using the 9. Then the RBK came out so I got one from Dex. I finally got to spend some time with it and all I gotta say is ‘yeah baby’. This blade is awesome.

Side note…a month or two ago some of you were going on about the Fiskars X27. My maul needs rehafting and I just haven’t gotten around to it so I bought the X27 and gave it a workout yesterday. Holy crap! One swing – split. One swing – split. Yet it’s lighter than a maul so it didn’t wear my old and outta shape butt out as quickly.

After splitting some of the big pile I had to do I thought I’d take the RBK and make some kindling. I was having so much fun with it I ended up making more kindling than I will use for a long while. It was so light in hand that short accurate flicks were easy. I was moving so quickly with it that at one point I thought I had better slow down, or at least count my fingers. I know it is capable of chopping the big stuff and batoning but since I had the Fiskars out I had the heavy stuff covered. For a little bit more fun I even tried to feather stick one of the pieces. Easy. Thanks Ethan for a great blade and addition to my growing collection.

Here’s a pic of the two together. (and yes, I did overswing the x27 quite a bit at first.)

goooooood times

a bit of exercise with a Fiskars converts most people pretty fast :D

still, i like those forged axe mauls i got last year - same idea - just older school but with the modern twist - they are SHARP... meaty

so now i have a range from 2 lbs to 6-8 lbs. almost never need the big guns

also have been using wedges - esp the new Stihl forged twisted aluminum wedge - that and a 2 or 4 lb hammer, you can make kindling all day with letter effort (or danger)

good stuff

i need to update this :D

in particular, traded that carving axe away. sometime, the whole set :D

Bladite: I thought about getting that Stihl twisted wedge...hmmmm...maybe soon. And re: the axe pics - too bad your choices are so limited

GSOM: That would've been my combo pre RBK, accept my 4 doesn't have a cool modded swedge like yours. Is that some of your fine work?

Yes, it is. Thread is here

I don't have the x27 but I do have an X7 hatchet that carries light but chops way waaaaaay outta proportion to its weight. The X7 and a BK16 would be able to do just about anything. They make a very versatile pair.
