So, I've been using my Fiskars X7 for a while. I've been very impressed with its chopping power and have managed to cut some sizable limbs in half. Also, the Scandinavian grind allows me to keep the blade hair shaving sharp, making it a more than adequate carver. The issue I am having is splitting lots. I'm trying to tackle some larger tasks such as making big bowls and need to split some larger pieces of wood.

Am I maxing out with this axes abilities? Maybe there are some techniques I need to know?

I've been trying to split the logs on its side, but haven't had much luck getting a clean split.
 
What exactly are you trying to split? What kind of wood? How large? And in any case you'll need more than a hatchet to carve a bowl.
 
I don't mean to split hairs, but I wouldn't say that you are maxing out the axes abilities. I would say that you're asking it to do something that is not intended for. That's not to say that it can't be done, it just takes a lot of work.

Pegs is asking about the wood type and size because that is key when it comes to splitting.
