Fit and Finish

I'm beginning to see and appreciate what we all talk about when we say that CRK has top quality fit and finish. This is not meant to knock the quality of other makers but in my experience the CRK has no equal.

I get why we say that the standard in the industry is the Sebenza. Why else would people do comparison videos with the Strider and Hinderer? They do not serve the same purpose at all but they still have to submit to a comparison with the Sebenza.

One example of this is the fit and finish. Compared to the SMF I used to have and the XM-18 I currently have, the 21 and Zaan just does not give me problems with off centered blades or too tight/loose tension in the pivot area. It could just be my own neurosis but those two things are a big deal to me.

I am not saying the fit and finish on the XM is bad b/c outside of the two examples I give above it is an amazing knife and Rick and Rob are wonderful to deal with. They will stand behind their product and fix the problems in the example above.

Does this seem off base to you?

You are right on! The F&F on the CRK's that I have owned / handled / seen, is always perfect! They are even better than many of the custom makers work! How I see it, they have a limited number of models, and they use this to their advantage and continually work to perfect every aspect of their manufacturing process. And it shows! They are the only company that I can order any knife from, and not find one disappointing in any way!

I've owned 2 large sebenzas, an Umnumzaan and a Nyala.

I still have all but one of the large Sebenzas.

I have yet to find much of a flaw in any of them. I sold most of my other knives.

I'm with you N2W. When I was fresh into CRK's I often wondered what was the hype all about. I probably had 40 other knives when I bought my first CRK knife and now I may have 10 of those knives left. My Sebenzas have made me into a knife snob.

I appreciate your insight. I almost pulled the trigger on a 3" XM-18 very recently, but digressed, as, while I know I'd love it, my small Seb has been everything I've ever needed and more. I love how the lockbar face/blade tang ramp is interfaced on the XM-18, allowing for good long-term wear characteristics, but when I think about it, I've never worn out a Seb, and if and when I do, I know it can go back to the Motherland for refurbishment.

I graduated to CRK from Benchmade's, but only after having owned custom folders as well. In regard to the Sebenza specifically, there's something to a knife that's been the subject of it's maker's refinement over the course of nearly 20 years.

Professor.
