Fit & finish?

I constantly see the phrase "fit & finish" being used. I understand the "finish" part refers to how well a knife is finished, attention to minute details, etc. I don't understand the "fit" part...are we referring to ergonomics? It always seems like whenever someone says fit & finish they're just referencing the final quality of knife, not the ergos. Thoughts?

Well, your right but backwards.

Fit refers to the tolerances, build strength, use of space, and general mechanisms of a knife.

Finish is just that, finish. Are the edges rounded off? Is the blade smooth enough to go through material easily? Do the grains match on both sides? Does the blade open smoothly? Etc.

The term is somewhat self explanitory, "Fit" I believe refers to how well the different parts of the knife "Fit" together, the right tolerances and everything, atleast that's always what I took it to mean.
