Showing off my small collection of Barlows.

attachment.php

The top is a Westmark with delrin scales.

Second from top is a modern Russell manufactured by Boker. Smooth bone.

Third is a Boker Tree Brand. Bone.

Fourth is a cocobola handled A.G. Russell. Also manufactured by Boker.

Last is a modern Case.

Barlows are my favorite style of knife. :)

Is that tailgate attached to a 80's something F150? It looks like one my wife had. The whole truck, not just the tailgate.

Oh, nice blades too. ;)

Nice collection CapCase! Check out the pics of mine in the other Barlow thread in this Traditional knife forum.
(I don't know how to transfer that reference to this thread. Suggestions anyone?)

1988 Ford F-150 4x4 with 5.0 Liter V8.

Hers was an 84 extended cab, 2x4 with a 351 Cleveland. Good power, rough fuel mileage. It was that two tone red and gray that was common to that era so the color as well as the pattern helped the id. Now if I could find a clean 80's era F150 4x4 with the 300ci straight six and actually be in a position to buy it. A 302 ain't bad either  I never got wrapped too much in the Ford vs Chevy thing with trucks. I was raised on Chevys, but have driven and appreciated both. I wouldn't turn down a good deal on any of the big three in an older truck.

Funny how there was a time when traditional knife patterns and trucks went together as working tools. Now we have outrageously priced, posh, 4x4 trucks that rarely, if ever leave the city limits driven by guys carrying equally, outrageously expensive ubbertaktikal blades that get equally minimal, real use.

As an even more side note, my 1986 Pontiac Bonneville I bought in January 2005 with 75,000 original miles turned past 100,000 miles today (well, yesterday as I'm writing this in the wee hours. Obviously we drive a bit more than the old fellow who originally owned it. Just a little. I've always liked trucks and sports cars, i.e. purpose built vehicles, so it is odd for me to be driving a basic sedan. Early on we named it the OMC (Old Man's Car) as it is the type car we envision some little old man driving. Actually, it used to be just that which accounted for the very low miles and great condition when I got it. I guess a basic pen or congress pattern would be the appropriate knife to carry when driving such a car. <g>

This has the potential for a new thread, matching vehicles to the appropriate knife patterns.

Sorry if I took the winding (forgive the pun) road in this post.

Speaking of old man cars, my wife and I just bought a Buick LeSabre. :D I would never have considered myself a Buick type person but I love it.

I love Barlows but it is kind of hard to find quality new Barlows. They seem to be getting to be more common though. I am impressed with the Westmark (a brand I had never heard of) even though it is a very inexpensive knife. But then, good inexpensive knives impress me more than good expensive knives.

Westmark was Western's low end brand (like CAMCO for Camillus). The brand is now used by Camillus for special runs (mostly for SMKW). Good solid user knives.

 Same for guns, wines, and a lot of other things. If I'm paying premium prices, well, the blasted thing should be top shelf. Unfortunately it isn't always the case. But to find something that is real, working quality and inexspensive is more of a find.

I will certainly take a look at the Westmarks.

Bartleby, thanks for the Westmark and CAMCO information.

Yeah, Cap, I have to admit there are times I kinda like the roomy OMC with the pillowtop seat. Just wish it reclined. It's a 305 V8, seats up to six and I still get 21 MPG, with or without the AC. When my back is stiff I'm doing good to get into it which is why I got rid of my old Celica GT-S. It fit great once you were in it. Getting in and out was the problem.

Well, it isn't a Barlow, but I did pop into the little Tru Value here in our little town and picked up a yellow handle Case Sod Buster Jr. in CV. My first Sodbuster. I'm calling it a late birthday present for myself. I asked the kid to let me see that Sodbuster and he looked at me odd and asked, "What did you call it?" I explained to him it was a Sodbuster pattern and when he looked at me like I was crazy I started pointing out and naming other patterns in the display. After he found the box and it said right on it, "SOD BUSTER," his face looked like he was thinking making I wasn't crazy. He then asked me if I collected knives. Said, I used to a little. LOL, I dropped it into my pocket (the display was the only one they had) while taking the box, and he asked my how many knives was I carrying right now. I told him this one made three. Then showed him my Kershaw Ken Onion Blackout and the SAK just peaking out of my watch pocket. Just about that time a coworker came in and pulled out a knife to open a cling wrapped tray of bakery cookies. I said, "See, they're tools and handy for all kinds of things."

Fortunately, the store is staffed by a little old lady who knows her stuff and been there for a long time (heck she may own it) and a few others who are the same. This Tru Value is mostly filled with hardware instead of trendy yuppie stuff. The lady and I were bemoaning the downfall of Schrade and the selling of the name. She felt it was just wrong. I agreed.

There was just something comforting about buying a classic brand, American made knife in a classic pattern in an classic branded, American hardware store that is still a hardware store. I may have to go light my pipe and savor that feeling.

You can just open a window to the other thread, copy the URL from the address bar of that window, and paste it into a reply like this:

If you want to make the link more readable, you can use the URL tag to add some text:

Here is the link to the thread with waynorth's picture.

Thanks for the information. I was wondering if Camillus made it.

They have been behind a lot of other brand names. At times I'm tempted to start collecting Camillus made barlows that were given different tangstamps/brandnames. It would in itself be an interesting yet inexpensive hobby.
