My sister in-law is wanting to buy her husband a fixed blade hunting knife for hog hunting. This knife will be used to kill the hog while the catch dogs hold it down. He has recently gotten into hunting so I want to get him something nice but not too nice. This is being bought for his birthday and I was assigned the task of locating him a quality knife. I was hoping to find something in the semi custom genre or something from a smaller knife maker. And the cost needs to be below $150.00

I have looked at the battle horse line up and looking for something similar to that. Micarta scales, leather sheath. blade length 6"-15"

Steel type does not matter to them but would like to have something that will hold up to be in the swamps and covered with blood.

And must have a sharp point. Something like a saber point or clip point.

Open to suggestions! Thanks

On second thought you might not find the tops for that price but it just first came to mind.

Go with a Becker BK9, strip the coating and sharpen the swedge. This will give a Strong knife with a piercing capability and it will have some sentimental ties due to your working on it and making it "His" knife.

For a gift knife, I always prefer to work on them somehow. I want the giftee to know that I had them and their expected uses in mind, not just during the purchase, but in the time spent on it.

Another Becker option is a BK5 since they are going the way of the dodo. And they can be had for a good price atm. Unless you get both (still under your $ cap) and you use the 5 and compare notes at the end if the season. The 5 should be able to break down hogs with no problem too.

If you arent comfortable doing the work, send a pm/email to dexwithers or his shop, Coyleoutdoors

Johnson Adventure Blades "baconmaker". Its made by kabar, and is specifically for hog hunting like you're doing. Also, it runs about $65 or so right now. You'll have to get custom micarta if you want that, but the rest of it is spot on.

Good luck with the choice :).

TOPS Wild Pig Hunter can be had for about $150 or a little more. Nice knife, a little on the heavy side, but quite the pig sticker.

I stumbled across the SOG Agency & the Buck Hoodlum I know they are production knives (not what I was asking for) but both look like they would be great hog knifes. Great price too.

The Tops Hog hunter out of all of the suggestions above I like the best.

Thanks guys still have not made my mind up but now have more options to email to my wife and sister in-law.

An under rated knife that gets little mention, and i think you can still find them for right around $100

Meyerco Darrel Ralph 18-xray fixed blade made in the USA with 154cm and comes with a kydex sheath.

Sturdy, great ergos, grip, and balance, good stainless steel, mine came with a great factory edge, definitely a knife I would recommend... Has that "pig sticker," feel to it.
