I received a much as anticipated feather Damascus hunter that has apparently been etched with manganese phosphate to bring out a pretty poorly done forging of the dasmascus. Many blade sections are hazy and the feathering doesn't stand out much. When I cleaned the blade I Ren waxed to see if it would even out the splotches, but had no success. Can someone direct me to a shop who can restore the blade, and bring out the best in the feather design? This was a custom job by a well-respected maker, but I don't trust him to adequately address the problem since he let it go out of his one man shop in this current condition.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Allan

If it was a custom job by a well-respected maker I'd say it'd be worth the effort to reach out, have a conversation and allow him the opportunity to make it right for you. That would be my first action as a buyer, and as a maker I'd feel sick if I'd let a customer down and not been given the chance to correct it. YMMV.

1: Document what you ordered (size, style, pattern, layer count, steels, materials or did you just say “make me a feather pattern knife) and Photograph what you received.

2: Do nothing to the blade other than look at it and keep it oiled or waxed. Especially if you are unsure or uneasy about something.

3: Contact maker and discuss your concerns, and expectations vs actuality.

4: Ask for further advise here for recommendations someone willing to work on another makers blade or DIY recommendations and tutorials.

I agree with the others. You should be in contact with the maker first.
If you want to hire someone to re-do the knife put that request in "The Exchange - Knifemaker Services Wanted" sub-forum.

i have to eco what the guys here have already said .. Contact him
id say to "Put yourself in his shoes" well known & Respected means
he CAN do good work.. i would just advise that if you Explain you are not 100% happy with the etch
and would like it to be cleaner/more defined that gives him the "Chance" to make it right..
if he says "Pound Sand" then & only then right him off.. If you Love the knife Despite the Maker being "Sketchy"
have someone else fix it.. otherwise why have a "Sketchy" guys knife where they Failed to make it right ??

If it is the knife/maker I am thinking of, you really need to give him the opportunity to take care of this.

Well-respected maker should never have allowed such a knife to leave his shop ? He GET chance to make it right in the moment customer ask him to make knife ................
