Long time lurker but still pretty new to membership and wondering how to repair the Rivet on my T5 sheath that holds the retaining strap to the sheath body failed after very little use. It's a nice sheath so rather than buying something else I figured i would fix it. I think a Chicago screw will scuff the handle scales. I do not have the specialty tools to do a traditional rivet. Any recommendations for a newbie?

Can't figure out how to post photos without using imgur.

We do kind of need photos to give you reasonable input. Not sure what your issues with imgur are but it has worked well for me for many years.
People will help with enough information.

Basic leather rivet tools and parts are very inexpensive on Amazon. I'd try that route, unless you want to learn how to hand saw leather.

A simple cap rivet would probably work fine in the application. The rivets are cheap and can be purchased from Tandy Leather and most craft stores. To install, a simple anvil and hammer will work. That will result in flat surfaces that will most likely be set slightly below the surface due to compression.
There are stronger rivets but they would be overkill here.
The other choice is to get a small spool of heavy thread and some needles to fit it and sew it on. Nothing to rub you handle and can be strong and durable. Again, Tandy or a craft store are places you can get small rolls of appropriate thread and needles. Just punch holes with an awl or small nail through both pieces simultaneously and saddle stitch together. Plenty of videos on saddle stitching on line. Neither of these options will cost much. Hope this helps.

Was the knife side of the rivet covered? Probably what ya want to do is use whats called a double cap rivet. These have a smooth cap on each side. You only need a hammer to set one and a smooth hard surface underneath. For further protection you can coat the knife side cap with clear nail polish.
