I've been drooling over beckers ever since i discovered them. And although beckers in general are considered high-value, affordable knives, they are too pricey for me. I am in medical school, and most of my savings go into things like books, research, and instruments.
Now, i CAN save up for one, but then it would be the most expensive knife i own and therefore would become my safe queen. . .which would be a shame, considering that it was built to stab tanks and baton through mountains. ;)
Among my choices are the varan and kumunga, both made by condor. 1075 carbon steel, full tang, hard plastic grip (which would be easy to customize/replace), costs way less than a bk7 or bk9. . .but there have been reports of warped, bent blades out of the box.

Are there any other options that stack up well against the condors?

I appreciate any and all suggestions, but please, no mora or axe posts. Thank you! :D

I was going to recommend Ontario, Kabar and Condor. Cold Steel makes a few to consider, such as the GI Tanto.

I think your on the right track w/ condor. Not sure why you wrote off Mora's. only other name that comes to mind is ontario. 1095 with a lot of designs, sp1, 2, 6, 10, etc. they are cheaper and you can by seconds for 30 to 40 that are usually tough to even figure out why there seconds. That being said, beckers all the way. Good luck w/ school.

No moras because i already have four, hahaha.
They are great knives. Tough and sharp as hell, but lately i've been leaning toward the bigger stuff. (Insert "compensating for something" joke here)
Thanks for the suggestions

Thats it, there's Becker .

If not, kabar 1277 heavy bowie.

Anything from the heavy chopper line really. I carry the kukri machete and a knife. I think its the most powerful chopper in kabars lineup right now but I haven't met the parangatang yet

Looking to conserve money but have a yen for a big, tough chopping blade? Ontario 12" machete. Don't let the word "machete" fool you like some people, it is nearly the epitome of the big choppers. I've put mine through the wringer, and it looks it, but it handles it all just fine. Very customizable too, it that appeals to you.

Beckers are nice and I have my share, but they can come later. I've got to warn you though, you may find you don't need one anymore...

Ontario Ranger series in 5160 and 1095. The 5160 line is pretty impressive for the price. I think I paid around $80 for my RD-7 which is 1/4" thick 5160.

I was going to say Becker...

So...

$70 isn't that much, and the cheapest BK is the 13, which is only $20. The 14, a popular necker, is only $35. For the BK9, it is only $70, which is a steal compared to other brands.

So...

Becker!
