Fixed-blade carry methods

I've never really carried a fixed-blade knife -- either for EDC, in the military, hunting, etc.

Lately I've picked up a couple for hunting / walking-around-in-the-woods.

I imagine it's a case of "what works best for you" as far as recommendation, but I'd be curious to see some pics or descriptions of what other people do.

I've been leaning toward 45-degree canted, strong-side, reverse-grip as probably my favorite and most practical, but I recently noticed someone on TV carrying one verticle belt-attached but with some of the sheath inside his jeans pocket. Just tried it, and it seems very practical for my 5" Patton. I would guess long-term it would wear a hole in the pocket, but might be OK for occasional use.

Anyone else?

You could get a multi-position kydes sheath for your blade from one of the forumite kydex makers and give several options a try. If you are carrying FOR hunting, something like your 45 degree cant or just the regular 'ol on the hip carry would be fine. Small of the back is an interesting carry method as it makes the blade kinda disappear. Also, you can have the Inside-waist-band which conceals a blade well.

I'm sure other forumites can help more than I. :)

Actually I'm more interested in what all the options are. I get the distinct impression there are a bunch I've never thought of.

Pictures would help as well.

If the blade length is roughly less than 4.5" and more than 3", you may be able to stick the entire thing in your front pocket and draw it without problems. A Nordic style, leather pouch sheath works especially well, because the mouth of the sheath is relatively thick and stiff. That allows the mouth to catch on the top seam of the pocket when you draw the knife, and also keeps it open when you want to resheath the knife.

I wish I could find a Kydex sheath with a pocket-clip that would allow this kind of fixed-blade carry. The pictures I've seen of the Sog Outline sheath looks like what I'm after.

I find that I really like static line carry as a rule.

I fix a static line to the tip end of the sheath, this static line is then put through a button hole or around a belt, etc.

Then I tuck the sheath and knife wherever.

Concealed, I carry a bag in my Right cargo pocket, in the bag goes my Spyderco Moran Drop Point, with the line through a button hole, then when I draw the knife, it and the sheath emerge from the pocket, about halfway through the draw the sheath comes off, and there it is.

With the sheath stat-lined to the belt, you can carry the knife tucked into the belt, into the waistline, or in a pocket.

The only additions that I plan to make to my carry methods is a clip that will attach to the sheath, and stabilize the knife during static line carry and another to carry the knife horizontal on the belt.

Something you may consider.... I think any fixed blade one owns should have multiple sheaths and attachments, that way one has an arsenal of carry methods.

You may want to look at this in reverse. Imagine a way that you would like to carry the knife, then ask a sheathmaker to make it so.
