Hi, I an looking for some advice on a fixed blade that will be around salt water. Here is what I need.

1. good corrosion resistance, I live on an island and work in commercial fishing, although not used directly for fishing will need good salt resistance.

2. 4-5 inch blade length.

3. Prefer a metal handle, aluminum etc for asthetic reasons.

The knife will be used on rope, backpacking, and large/small game So it needs to be versitile in design. Any suggestions?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

There are a ton of choices out there -- how much are you wanting to spend?

Price is not really a factor I expect a pretty high price for good metals. I'm looking for something that will last a while and hold a pretty good edge. This is a knife that I will wear on a daily basis for utility. I will also have it on while working for safety. I guess I should add that it need to be easy to get out of the sheath if neccesary and can cut rope fast. I work as a lobsterman here in maine and if you go over with rope around your ankle you need something nice and sharp to cut that rope fast. I also do a lot of backpacking. I think closer to a 4" blade is what I'm looking for. I should probably get a picture of something like the design type so I can narrow down some of the choices.

They main reason i'm here is for the knowledge base you guys have. You know what knive brands are crap and what are good, I don't since I have been dealing with cheap 3 dollar stuff for work which wear out very fast. I'll go picture hunting here in a second or if you have something in mind to suggest please post a link.

I guess a talonite knife would be great for you...

Look at a Camillius/Simonich talonite knife....

Thats a good choice. I have never heard of talonite before. Are they any other knives made from that metal? Also where do you guys buy from?

The sheath on that particular knife is something I like as well. The talonite is on the ball for corrosion and size. Having the clip type sheath would be a huge help for attaching to oil pants in this cold weather now and rain in summer. In that sense I guess a tactical, sheath/knife might be a good choice as well.

If price isn't an issue, try Mission Knives. They are really expensive, but their Ti series are made out of a titanium alloy. Check them out Mission knives

I have also got an interest in the 940 osborne vs. the 806d2 afck folders from osborne. Leaning toward the osborne.

From what your describing I would say talonite beyond a doubt. Probably you can get by with a slightly shorter blade too. Most talonite knives are 3 to 3.5 inch blades. Talonite is not good at all if your going to pry anything with it. Its only a cutting tool. Ti knives that I have seen tend to be very combat oriented and you certainly can pry with them. The folders made by mission might be the exception(they are more utility oriented), but Ti is harder to sharpen well than talonite from the opinions I have seen. Could just wash and oil your blade alot ;-) Or buy several factory knives of stainless steel and toss them when they finally get too rusty, for the price of a single talonite or ti knife.
