fixed blade CPM-10V

I currently have two fixed blades of what I would consider PREMIUM steel.....D2 (Dozier slim outdoorsman)and VG-10 (Fallkniven F1).

I have read alot about CPM-10V and am considering purchasing a fixed blade in this steel of simalar size to the two knives I mentioned above.

My question is where would I find such a knife of similar size AND similar price/quality ratio????

Your valued input would be greatly appreciated,

I own both knives you mention and each in its own right is a great knife.

As you are probably aware, CPM10V is one of the newer super steels and commands a premium because of the base cost of the steel, the cost of grinding it and due to the limited number of craftsman experienced enough and willing to work with it. Anticipate paying several times more for a high quality CPM10V Knife then you paid for the Dozier.

Phil Wilson has the knowledge and experience and his work is exceptional. He specializes in CPM materials. I suggest you read the article at the attached link, then contact Phil.

I'm not sure what his current lead times are, but don't be surprised if he quotes 12 months or longer. Whatever the wait, the knife is worth it.

The little 10V "GMC" pictured on his "full-tang knives" page is mine, and I've been very happy with it. I bought it as an inexpensive way to try out the steel, but it has turned out to be a very useful knife.
Doug uses Paul Bos for HT, and can probably make whatever style knife you want.
He was a pleasure to deal with, and answered some questions, and offered to send me a bunch more info on steels if I needed it, before I talked about buying the knife.
I really like the looks of his "Rifleman" model:)

Sorry about that! I forgot the article pre-dated Phil's new E-mail address; Here it is: seamount@bigplanet.com I have his phone number too but he's sometimes hard to catch. Initial contact via E-mail is your best bet.

Phil will send any printed info you like on CPM. He recently published an article on CPM 30V in BLADE with a 2nd article and possiblly a 3rd scheduled for later this year.

The Mondt knives look really good and and HT by Bos is tough to beat. Phil does his own HT so he is sole author from start to finish if that is important.

Owen: how thick is the Mondt blade and is it a flat or convex grind?

I appreciate the help you all have supplied...

I have e-mailed both Phil Wilson and Doug Mondt and am waiting their response.

Brian T's Knife is ALMOST the knife I specified from both makers, sanes holes in handle and 3.25" blade.( solid handle 4" blade).

I know patience is a vertue, but its something I lack....if lead times are too long I may consider Brian's offer if still avalible.

The email address in the above is fixed. I would strongly recommend Phil as he does his own heat treating and explores different methods to find the best results. He also uses the steels for the use that they were optimally designed for which is very high performance cutting ability and edge retention. He runs them very hard and the edges very thin and acute. You might want to ask him about CPM-125V as well.

Cliff,

I found your evulation page of great interest...I purchased both my Dozier and Fallkniven as a result of your extensive tests. It is BY FAR the most usefull info I have run across.I am new to the area of HIGH END knives and have been extremely pleased with the purchases I have maded based on the extensive testing you have done.

I have no interest in anything but WORKING knives as almost all my free time involves outdoor persuits.I stumbled upon BLADE FORUM in search of info on better edge holding steel after returning from a week long hunting trip in northern N.H.

I never realized there was such a diverse selection of steels and their special traits both plus and minus.

I appreciate a quality product, making my living selling a product that can take up to two years to get and with a price tag up to 150k.

I originally tryed to save a few dollars and purchased a couple of 8A blades and they were O.K.....BUT still didn't have the edge holding ability I was looking for.I thought my quest was over when I got my Dozier in D2,but it looks like CPM-10V is even better.

Will this end my quest OR is there something even better for my needs than CPM-10V

Many thanks to everyone who responded to my post

.. is there something even better for my needs than CPM-10V

Phil has worked with steels which he runs harder than 10V and have a much greater wear resistance, so for light use cutting they will give greater edge retention and probably better cutting ability, CPM-125V is one of these steels. I don't know about his supply though, it couldn't hurt to ask.

Thanks for the comments on the webpages, that is the goal.

Cliff:

I'll add my thanks too! We all value your time, effort and objective, articulate evaluations.

RifRaf, the blade on mine is 1/8" thick, and a full flat grind.
Got about a 20* included back bevel, with a 30* final edge, and it cuts really well for such a small knife. I wouldn't mind if it were 3/32" stock, though.

After receiving replies from both Phil Wilson ( 10-12 mos lead time) and Doug Mondt( 10 wks.) I decided to place my order with Doug.....

I found Doug to be very helpful in answering ALL my questions in a timely manner;and having the exact pattern on hand that met my specifications to a "T" made it easy.(my first real custom) What I have read on this forum about Paul Bos heat treating confirmed my decision to go with Doug.

I really liked what I read about Phil's work, and may order one of his field grade knives at a later date.

It's kind of exciting planning the production of a knife built to your exact specifications, right down to the sheath ,with the bladesmith himself!

Now the worst part......THE WAIT

Thanks again for everyones help,

grouse hunter
